Big Internet Responsible for Syphilis

From Yahoo News:
The Internet has played a significant role in the latest increase in cases of syphilis among gay men by introducing partners more likely to practice high-risk sex, according to a study released on Wednesday.

About 22 percent of homosexual men diagnosed with early stage syphilis reported meeting one or more of their sexual partners through the Internet around the time they were infected, said the study by the Los Angeles Health Department.

Researchers at a national conference in Philadelphia on the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases also said they found gays who used the Web to meet sex partners were almost four times as likely to have anonymous sex than non-Internet users. They were also more than twice as likely to use injected drugs as those who found partners more traditionally.

Matt's Chat

There's nothing quite like taking personal responsibility for your behavior... And for those of you who will turn this commentary into some sort of homophobic rant, stop. I have the same feelings about heteros who blame anyone but themselves for their lot in life too.

Mark's Remarks

Get ready for the racist and homophobe comments, Matt, because that is what anyone who does not want to take responsibility for their own actions and deathstyles does when they are confronted with facts. Instead of saying, wow, internet encounters seem to be unsafe, or at least there is statistical data backing such, the liberals and those who may have their own agendas will label you as a fearmonger and a hateful bigot.

The sad reality is, more people are being irresponsible, and more are bearing the burden. Regardless of whether they are gay or straight, these trysts and such are dangerous. Nuff said.
