Syrian Jihad

From the Washington Times:
Syria is "facilitating" the movement of foreign fighters into Iraq and helping supply them with arms, according to U.S. military officials with access to intelligence reports.

The sources said the reporting has not been clear on whether hard-line Syrian President Bashar Assad is involved directly in ordering the aid. But they say he has much to lose if Iraq becomes a pro-U.S. democratic country.

Foreign fighters from Syria have become a major stumbling block to stabilizing Iraq and turning over sovereignty by June 30.

The bloody fighting in Fallujah, for example, is inspired, in part, by well-armed foreign jihadists who crossed the Syrian border and have committed some of the most gruesome attacks against Americans and their allies.

Officials said Syrian help includes facilitating their border crossing, arming them and allowing them to return for fresh supplies.

Asked how conclusive U.S. intelligence is on Syrian aid, one official said, "No doubt about it."

Matt's Chat

Somewhere, I read that all the insurgency was about Iraqi nationalism or some such rubbish. I said so then and I'll say so again now: that is rubbish. Syria and Iran think they are next. They may be right. Already there have been demonstrations. And the number of excuses for not intervening are disappearing. Border security in Iraq must be maintained if the violence is to be stopped. That means there are going to be more clashes in the now "not-so-secret" war going on at the Syrian-Iraqi border. It won't surprise me much if similar skirmishes will take place along the Iranian and Saudi borders soon as well.

Mark's Remarks

Syria and Iran WILL BE NEXT if they keep this garbage up....we need to send a clear message to these maniacal mullahs and pathetic princes: quit sending these animals into Iraq or we are gonna bring the thunder....I hate to sound like such a hawk, but it really is getting old. We are going to have to issue ultimatums and tell these folks we are sealing the borders, and if they do not do the same, then they WILL be next.
