WASHINGTON (AP) The federal budget deficit for the current year will drop to $296 billion, the White House said Tuesday. As usual, I blame Bush...
UPDATE: Majority Leader John Boehner issued this statement (received via email):
"Today's announcement is another clear signal that Republicans are making real progress on behalf of American taxpayers to reduce and eventually eliminate our deficit. The fact is, keeping taxes low - coupled with fiscal discipline and strong economic growth - is an effective blueprint for reducing and eliminating the deficit. Republicans continue to make fiscal restraint a top priority, passing the line-item veto, earmark reform, and a fiscally responsible budget while rejecting Democrats' calls for higher taxes and some $45.2 billion in wasteful spending.Still, there is much more work to be done...
"The Democrats talk about fiscal responsibility but advocate higher taxes to pay for their reckless new spending. They talk about reducing waste but propose more government programs. They talk about entitlement programs but consistently avoid making the tough decisions it will require to save these benefits for our children and our grandchildren. If Democrats are serious about fiscal responsibility, they should begin by offering American taxpayers something more than another round of tax hikes and new spending."
