A Reagan Dime?

U.S. Rep. Mark Souder wants to put former President Ronald Reagan in everyone's pocket.

The Indiana Republican is drumming up support in Congress for a bill to replace Franklin D. Roosevelt's profile on the dime with Reagan's.

Souder said it's particularly fitting to honor Reagan on the dime because "Reagan was wounded . . . by a bullet that had ricocheted and flattened to the size of a dime," he wrote his colleagues.

So far he's enlisted 80 backers.

But keepers of FDR'S legacy say the dime and Roosevelt have a unique connection. The March of Dimes was an outgrowth of a foundation that Roosevelt founded to find a cure for the infantile paralysis he suffered from.

Matt's Chat

Reagan is my favorite president too, but putting him on the dime is a ridiculous idea. This would be a very costly venture that we really do not need to undertake. There are plenty of other ways to celebrate the life, times, and contributions of this beloved president.

Mark's Remarks

This would be a great honor, but honestly, why don't we take someone else's piece of money who already has been honored? I mean, why not the quarter, as Washington has the dollar? Or why not the penny, as Lincoln has the 5 dollar bill? I think it deserves some thought, but at this time of peril where we are fighting a war on terror, I believe the Former President, if he were able, would tell the members of Congress to get to work on helping defeat the enemies of America.
