US To Bailout EU?

Yes, you read that right. Even though we are broke beyond reason, we are now going to bailout the European Union. From CNBC:
The United States would be ready to support the extension of the European Financial Stability Facility via an extra commitment of money from the International Monetary Fund, a U.S. official told Reuters on Wednesday.

"There are a lot of people talking about that. I think the European Commission has talked about that," said the U.S. official, commenting on enlarging the 750 billion euro ($980 billion) EU/IMF European stability fund. "It is up to the Europeans. We will certainly support using the IMF in these circumstances."

"There are obviously some severe market problems," said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity. "In May, it was Greece. This is Ireland and Portugal. If there is contagion that's a huge problem for the global economy."

The remarks foreshadow a visit to Europe this week by a U.S. Treasury envoy who is expected to visit Berlin, Madrid and Paris to hold talks on the ramifications of the debt crisis.

The developments have echoes of the pressure applied by Washington on European capitals last May to create the near $1 trillion EFSF safety net that was last week used to rescue Ireland after its banking crisis spiraled out of control.

The IMF, whose biggest single shareholder is the United States, has committed 250 billion euros to the EFSF.

While reluctant to dictate to Europe how it should address the unfolding debt crisis, the U.S. government is growing concerned about the global fallout of Europe's predicament.

UGH! WTF?!?!?!?

With Old Europe Snoring, Will Ukraine be Next?

Vlad the Impaler is moving to take back the old Soviet Union. This kleptocracy as some call it, is nothing more than a revival of good old fashioned socialist imperialism as incubated under Lenin, grown under Stalin, and worked by the Politburo until the 1980s. Of course, while some are debating what kind of vocabulary we should be using to call this return to imperialism, Vlad is looking for a new target. Edvard Shevardnadze, former Soviet foreign minister and former Georgian president, has an idea of where he will go next:
``We still don't know who's next,'' said former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, who was foreign minister under the last Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, who helped end the Cold War. ``Ukraine most likely,'' because of its Russian- speaking population and naval base in the Crimea, Shevardnadze said in an interview today.

The U.S. has long seen Georgia and Ukraine as counterweights to Russia's influence in the region. Opposition leaders in the two countries came to power after U.S.-backed popular protests in 2003 and 2004. Their ascension advanced an American strategy that seeks to expand NATO to include both countries and secure energy routes from the Caspian Sea that bypass Russia. The BP Plc-led Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline to Turkey runs through Georgia.

See, Russia fears losing influence on these sovereign states, especially with the resources they provide. If they attack now, they can get them in line and make them give up on dreams of democracy and NATO and help return them to serf status. That sad part is, maybe this could have been avoided if the old Europe members would have fast tracked membership. They had the opportunity, but did not. From the UK Guardian, of all places:
In April this year, an embattled American president went to the Nato summit in Bucharest and asked Nato allies to offer Ukraine and Georgia a membership action plan (Map). Bush had been warned that European allies would not agree to the proposal, but he tried anyway. Back in Washington, European rejection of the Map was greeted with disgust. As one leftwing foreign policy expert told me the fact that France was talking about a "balance of power with eastern Europe" illustrated that the organisation was becoming a joke. The Europeans, he said, "have not woken up to the realities of the world". He was livid, to say the least, about the refusal to offer a Map to either country. And he, like myself, was a Democrat.

Now the chickens of European equivocation are coming home to roost. During the Bucharest summit, where the then Russian president, Vladimir Putin, met with Nato leaders, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said:

We [Russians] don't believe that this policy of expanding Nato eastwards is playing a positive role in creating stability and strengthening democracy in the heart of Europe.

Apparently the armed invasion of Georgia does promote stability and democracy. I am not going to defend the tactics or rhetoric of the Georgians leading up to this crisis; they have been less than stellar in their handling of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. But the fact that so many European commentators feel that the Russian invasion was somehow deserved or legitimate is appalling. Especially since Europeans have so loudly...decried the overly-militarised policies of George Bush. Talk about hypocrisy.

Nato extended a hand to Georgia, it would have deterred the Russians from getting aggressive and it would have given the west more leverage to pressure President Saakashvili to address the problems of South Ossetia and Abkhazia responsibly. By refusing the give Georgia a Map, Germany, France and the rest of the alliance gave the Kremlin a veto on Georgia's Nato membership, which is totally unacceptable. Now look where we are – once again, armed conflict in the backyard of Europe that European diplomacy has been unable to resolve in any reasonable way.

Europe needs to wake up and smell the jet fumes from the Russian planes bombing Georgia. Russia is a great power and the Kremlin pays great power politics. America understands this, Europe does not. For too long Moscow has successfully divided Europe. Putin split the old members of the EU from the new members as he bullied Poland and Estonia without any opposition from countries such as Germany and France. The Kremlin fractured Europe over the issue of energy, with Berlin politicians selling their souls for a fix of natural gas despite the worries of allied countries to the east and north. Moscow also tried to pit the US and parts of Europe against each other on the issue of missile defence. Europe has stood silently by, allowing European principles to be trampled again and again.

All too often, Nato is painted in shades of war by the far left. But the legacy of the alliance is not one of conflict. During the cold war, non-democratic countries such as Spain, Portugal, Greece and Turkey became members and over time they made the transition to fully-fledged democracies. Nato is as much about making peace among its members, as it is deterring external attack. It was Nato that created the space for Franco-German rapprochement in the 1950s that saw the birth of the EU. Had the alliance extended a hand to Georgia and Ukraine, it would have ensured the extension of peace and security in eastern Europe and these countries' future inclusion in a democratic and peaceful continent.

Gosh, and who does Barack Obama want to ask about before making policy decisions, you know, since he is a citizen of the world now, as he said in his Berlin speech? Yep, old Europe. Doesn't sound like a winning policy for peace and democracy to me, and glad to see the folks at the Guardian realize this, or at least this particular writer does.

WMD Blast: Weekend Edition

Here are just a few of the stories I am reading this morning. Please enjoy...

  • Peggy Lehner (R) should have no opposition from liberals in her run for the Ohio House. Why? She's a woman and the Akron Beacon Journal has a whole 5 page piece on the state of women in Ohio politics. I don't know what gender has to do with how a person might legislate, but I'm sure Peggy will gladly accept the support...

  • Kosovo is declaring independence today... (AP story) Earlier this morning, in Africa, President Bush said that it would be in Kosovo's best interests to be alligned with Europe.

  • A potential harbinger of disaster for John Kasich... Does Kasich actually support Mike Huckabee? When Kasich's name first started circulating as a possible candidate for Governor, I went out and got his book "Stand for Something" and was not overly impressed. Something was nagging my unconscious and this tidbit fits that same parameter...

Is the Dollar Too Low or the Euro Too High?

...that is the question being posed by this article written by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard for the UK Telegraph's business blog.
The die is now cast. As the euro brushes $1.50 against the dollar, it is already too late to stop the eurozone hurtling into a full-fledged economic and political crisis. We now have to start asking whether the EU itself will survive in its current form.

It takes eighteen months or so for the full effects of currency changes to feed through, so the damage will snowball late next year and beyond into 2009. Although "damage" is a relative term.

As Airbus chief Thomas Enders warned in a speech to the Hamburg workers last night, Europe's champion plane-maker - the symbol of European unification, in the words or ex-French president Jacques Chirac -- is now facing a "life-threatening" crisis.

Mr Enders said the company's business model is "no longer viable", and "massive losses" are on the horizon. So much for all those currency hedges that analysts like to cite. Have they ever tried to buy a currency hedge? They would discover how expensive these instruments are. Hedges cannot protect a company with $220bn in delivery contracts priced in dollars, when the euro/sterling cost-base is leaping into the stratosphere.

The sudden rocketing in sovereign bond spreads this week between core German Bunds and Club Med debt - Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek, as well as Irish, Belgian and Slovenian - is a clear sign that markets are starting to price in a break-up risk for the single currency, however remote. Italian spreads have risen beyond the danger point of 40 basis points. This is less than the 100bp or so seen in Quebec (viz Ontario debt) when it looked as if the separatists might prevail. But it is dangerous nevertheless.
Now I won't pretend, even for a moment, that WMD is the business end of the blogosphere...but it seems to me as if there just might be something to this.

We have been hearing a LOT about how weak the dollar is lately and how that means we're all headed for DOOM, GLOOM, breadlines, and gas rationing...but, I have to point out that a good deal of these folks are liberals. What that means is that they tend to look for the grayest cloud on any given day. There very well may be an alternative explanation that doesn't mean America is sinking into an abyss.

Of course, the thing missing from this analysis is China...

More Evidence French Frogs Not Our Friends, Conspiracy Nutjobs

If the new French president was truly an ally of the US or honorable, he would fire this dumb frog b***h who joined the 9/11 conspiracy chorus.
A senior French politician, now a minister in President Nicolas Sarkozy's government, suggested last year that U.S. President George W. Bush might have been behind the September 11, 2001 attacks, according to a website.
The www.ReOpen911.info website, which promotes September 11 conspiracy theories, has posted a video clip of French Housing Minister Christine Boutin appearing to question that Osama bin Laden's al Qaeda group orchestrated the attacks. Boutin's office sought to play down the remarks.

Asked in an interview last November, before she became minister, whether she thought Bush might be behind the attacks, Boutin says: "I think it is possible. I think it is possible."

Do you know what is certain, not just possible? That France gave Iraq money when it was illegal as adjudicated by the UN, and gave them illegal weapons. We have the books and transactions. Even as the Kurds were slaughtered, France gave Hussein money and weapons. We have uncovered the info in Iraq. That is not just possible, it is fact!
And this is beyond badmouthing Bush. Call him a buffoon, call him an idiot. This is badmouthing the US, making light of the sacrifice of thousands. The reopen 9/11 pepole are some of the same people who said no one died in the planes that crashed into the towers or in the field or at the Pentagon. And this stupid frog wench joined their chorus? France is not our friend, as long as these ungreatful cowards continue to crow in this manner.
So kindly piss off, madam Minister.

Is the Brit PM up for the War on Terror Bumper Sticker?

In the wake of the attempted terrorBumper Stickers attacks on the UK, these statements are even more ignorant and stupid from the new British PM. Here they are:
In a speech to lawmakers Monday, Smith called terrorists "criminals whose victims come from all walks of life, communities and religious backgrounds." Brown has spoken of "al-Qaida" attackers but not of "Islamic" or "Muslim" terrorists.

Hmm...this guy is still living on the old profile. He doesn't get it. Maybe he is John Edwards in disguise. Maybe he is the UK version of the Breck Girl. I don't know. What I do know, is that Brits are clueless if they think this guy is better than Blair. He talks of consensus building and such. Not a clue.

Look at who has conducted the attacks. All were what so called faith? Muslim. All were from islamist factions of the so called faith, and were part of radical terrorist cells. But those frank words would make some people mad, and we all should feel happy, and then we will like live together in peace and harmony. How has that worked out so far, with two near car bombs and a flaming SUV?

    Blair Resigns

    AP News Alert:

    UPDATE - AP News Alert:
LONDON (AP) Queen Elizabeth II confirms Gordon Brown as Britain's new prime minister.
    ...and a new era begins...

UPDATE 2 - Rudy Guiliani on Blair (received via email):
"Like all Americans, I was deeply moved by Prime Minister Tony Blair's strong support for America after 9/11. The people of New York and of America will forever remember how articulately and passionately Mr. Blair stood by America 's side. I was fortunate to meet with him outside of St. Thomas Church at a memorial service for UK citizens who died on 9/11. It was clear then that the Prime Minister saw very real similarities between the war we are currently fighting and World War II.

“I had occasion to visit with him several times in London and I could see then that while his approach may have been separated by generations and ideology, history will see Mr. Blair as a modern-day Churchill. Because they led through strength and fought for what is right, millions have been liberated, and the world is on a path to safety and prosperity.

“I am hopeful that the next prime minister will maintain the same level of friendship and cooperation with America, and the same level of resolute, principled engagement with the world."

    Belgium Update

Imagine my surprise at this news... (HT: Bizzy):
Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt is to tender his government's resignation Monday, one day after general elections in which conservatives - led by Christian Democrats - dealt his Socialist-Liberal coalition a stunning defeat.

As votes were still counted Sunday, Verhofstadt, 54, conceded defeat, saying he would leave the limelight after eight years as prime minister. "The voters of our country ... have opted for a different majority," he said.
For reasons that only the regulars and the insiders will fathom, I find this to be absolutely delightful.

    France Gets One Right

    From the Guardian:
France's highest court Tuesday rejected as unlawful the first marriage by a gay couple in France, annulling the union of the two men.

Stephane Charpin and Bertrand Charpentier were married in a civil ceremony on June 5, 2004, in Begles, a town in the southwest Bordeaux region. The government immediately said the union was outside the law, and a series of court decisions unfavorable to the couple followed.

In the latest decision, the court ruled that "under French law, marriage is a union between a man and a woman," backing a 2005 decision by an appeals court in Bordeaux.
There may yet be some hope for France...
Prosecutor Marc Domingo said during an earlier court hearing that it was the parliament, not judges, who should have the final word in any legalization of marriages involving homosexual couples.
I've heard something similar...where have I heard that before???

Missile Defense Update: Iran Ballistic Missiles Pose a Direct Threat to Europe

    From PR/US Newswire:
Riki Ellison, President of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance (Link) has analyzed the threat of Iran to the United States and its allies and has gone on record detailing why the United States and the western world should be concerned about the growing ballistic missile threat of Iran. He has also stated that our current projections to deploy a force of ground-based interceptors in Europe are focused on deployment exclusively in Poland, and not in Great Britain.

"Iran has over 20 intermediate range missiles that can reach continental Europe," stated Riki Ellison, President of the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance. "These 20 BM-25 missiles were purchased from North Korea in 2005 and are a variant of the Soviet SS-N-6 (R-27) submarine-launched ballistic missile. With a range beyond 3,000 kilometers, these missiles pose a direct threat to central Europe." Last week Iran launched a sub-orbit missile that traveled 94 miles into space and declared their intent to launch satellites in the near future. On last week's launch of a sub-orbital missile by Iran, Ellison noted that "Having orbital satellite launch capability, Iran would have access to deliver payloads to anyplace on earth, as was first powerfully demonstrated 50 years ago by the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik in 1957."

With the growing and real threat from Iran, Ellison justified the need for a site in Europe by saying, "A third U.S. missile defense site in Europe is for the primary mission of protecting U.S. interests located there from Middle Eastern, specifically Iranian, missile threats. There are approximately 56,000 Untied States troops in Europe and Kosovo, countless American citizens, as well as billions of dollars of US military assets. From an allied and NATO perspective it is vital for any part of Europe and/or NATO forces not to be held hostage or coerced by Iranian missile threats."

However, Ellison suggested that placing a missile site in Britain is not a viable option. "The United States is not seeking, requesting, or funding additional or substitute missile defense sites in Europe other than the single proposed site in Poland. A missile defense site in Great Britain or outside of central Europe would be unable to protect all U.S. interests in Europe from an intermediate or long-range Iranian missile and thus would not be a viable option. The east coast of the United States is already protected from potential Iranian long range ballistic missiles by the missile defense site in Alaska. A third site in Poland would not serve as the primary protection against missiles directed at the homeland of the United States from the Middle East."

Mr. Ellison finished his statement by encouraging cooperation, saying "It is imperative that we, as a nation and as a world, continue to move ahead with urgency to fund, build, and deploy a ground based missile defense site in Poland and the accompanying radar site in the Czech Republic that will defend and protect Europe. This system poses no offensive threat to any nation, including Russia, as it is purely a defensive system that makes use of no offensive weapons, but makes intercepts in space by colliding into the incoming missile at very high speeds."
