Long time readers of WMD might like to note that earlier this week, Butler County GOP Central Committee chair Judy Shelton resigned her positions with the party and the Board of Elections.
While many who served with me in my time on the Central Committee know that Judy and I did not have the best relationship, I am deeply saddened to learn that one of her children recently passed away. If she and/or her husband (sidebar: he once called me a not-so-nice name to my face at a meeting once) happen to see this, I wish to express my deepest condolences for their loss.
In the Journal-News article, Shelton says, “It’s time with the presidential (election) coming up. I would like to see fresh, new leadership going forward.” Personally, I thought it was "time" quite awhile ago. She's been divisive. She's held on to power that she shouldn't have (speaking of the BOE position...) when the by-laws (at least at the time anyway) instructed something different. In general, I have found her willing to accept a lot of the shenanigans that have plagued the Butler County Republican Party over the years. Some might even suggest that she allowed it and encouraged it. The turmoil kept the factions fighting instead of uniting to stop a lot of it.
I'm glad to see her go.
Looking forward, there are several good people that I'd love to see step up. Bill Lack would be fantastic. He's smart and a savvy political operative, but he's busy with other pursuits. Nancy Riggs is exactly the right sort of person for the job too, but I hear she isn't interested in running.
Chris Wunnenburg is the most likely successor. He's politically astute and has been trying for years to advance in the hierarchy. My understanding is that he has the support of elected officials and Team Boehner, which makes him a pretty good bet.
Unless Roger Reynolds or Nancy Nix decide to run (and they are both too busy with their official duties, I would think), Chris has my support as well.
It is well past time for real reform to come to Butler County.

This and That or Matt Checks In
I've been off the grid for a bit, but still keeping up on the news and other goings on as I moved TIB Central Command to its new super secret location. I wanted to take a few minutes of your precious time to comment on a few things that have been thrust upon my radar...
BUTLER COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS:
It is no secret that Butler County's government is in no danger of running short of shenanigans, but this latest episode demonstrates just how very little progress has been made in reforming local government. Once again, we learn of backroom deals that benefit politicians and their families and the people whom we have placed our public trust are screwing us. Still. After all these years and after all the examples of what happens when politicians finally get caught, there are still clowns who insist on playing these same old games.
Sure...it happens everywhere. I'm no fool, no matter what the establishment will try to get you to believe. But I took some measure of pride in shining a candle's worth of light in to the dark recesses of Butler County's tomfoolery and it pains me that even after expending so many pixels here on the subject, we really haven't made that much progress in rooting out the disease that plagues the county.
So, yeah, put me down in the column of favoring a ray or three of sunshine on to the dark space that is the Butler County Board of Elections. I can only hope that a few more politicians learn that nepotism and chicanery is no way to run government.
And if, by some strange coincidence, you have been living under a rock (like I have the last few weeks) and have no idea what this is about, go over to the Journal-News site and run a search on Board of Elections.

"Thingamabobs Have Consequences" by Jonah Goldberg:
APOCALYPTIC CONSERVATISM?
My immediate reaction to a National Review (dead tree edition or I'd link to it) piece by Lowery and Ponnuru is to point out that there is a difference between grassroots activists and the "elite" few engaged in party politics. That's why there are so many squabbles between the "Republican Party" and the "Tea Party" people. The GOP has an agenda to win elections. The TP's agenda is all about ideology. As a guy who straddled both worlds, I can say that neither position is necessarily right at any given time. Instead of treating the TP like some doody left on the front yard, maybe the GOP ought to find better ways of explaining their pragmatism to the TP. I've always said that the TP has a problem with patience and their inexperience with politics has been their worst enemy.
The piece was about the defunding Obamacare fight and as usual you can count on National Review to wag their finger at any conservative who dares to stand on principle and fight the good fight for the sake of fighting a good fight against an administration hellbent on destroying our way of life with an agenda so far left it makes Stalin look like a righty. I could appreciate their position more if they would actually promote an alternative strategy other than "Roll over and take it." but they don't.
Say what you want about the new guys with the R at the end of their names (and I have); but, for the most part, they aren't in DC to gain new friends and attend parties. We're in serious trouble in this country and if we don't stop messing around, we're going to lose everything. So while I can understand the thought process behind picking your battles for a political win, I also firmly back ANY fight that stands in opposition to the further destruction of our values and freedom.
A point made in the article is that conservatives alone are not sufficiently strong enough in numbers to win on their own. And that is true. But let me point out that there are more conservatives in this country than any other ideology. That has to count for something. When the establishment continually evaluates their losses as excuses to turn left, somebody needs to remind the establishment that by drawing in more "moderates" you turn off that base of support that makes the party viable in the first place. Democrats don't do this. They don't look at a loss and say, "We need to get more conservative." No. They double down on their principles and give us Obama. Twice. Heck, that Nancy Pelosi still holds a leadership position ought to tell you all you need to know about that.
My advice to both sides is to stop hurting each other and find ways to work on the things that we agree on while we talk about the things that we don't. Rome wasn't built in a day. Show some patience. Politics is a marathon, not a sprint.
BOEHNER ON IMMIGRATION:
Seriously?
Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.
It's all I got on that... I have no idea what he's doing.
I am not at all pleased with what I've seen so far. Hiring a McCainite Shamnesty Cheerleader isn't encouraging.
Still kinda hoping this is all some sort of grand strategery intended to bluff Obama on the issue, but I know better...

"Thingamabobs Have Consequences" by Jonah Goldberg:
...the minimum wage is a boon to robots. If you make human labor more expensive, non-human labor becomes more attractive. If you tell car-wash owners that they have to pay their employees $100 an hour, the owner will most likely search his desk for that business card from that salesman from Acme Robots. The above is a short excerpt from the opening paragraph from Jonah's G-File "e-newsletter" that hit my inbox today. Since POTUS is trying to divert attention from his crummy website for his even more diabolical signature legislation with more prattle on increasing the minimum wage, I thought it relevant to let someone else say what I've been telling you all for years: Increasing the minimum wage is the best way to increase unemployment amongst the already hardest hit segments of our population...but don't let the truth stop liberals from distracting us from more important stuff with even more promises of "free" stuff. Because that's never been done before...

WMD Blast: Kasich and Shelton Edition
Kasich Goes Full Obama and Enlists Help of Children to Lobby His Agenda?
Columbus Dispatch's The Daily Briefing blog has the story.
He's probably joking, but this is exactly the sort of thing one might expect from our governor these days.
What's next, John? An Enemies List???
Judy Shelton LIED to Her Own Party
Judy Shelton is the Central Committee Chairman in Butler County. She's been engaging in some shenanigans with the Board of Elections to rearrange the precincts. She actually told the Central Committee that it wouldn't happen and that those who were concerned were "ill-informed" but here is the Hamilton Journal News reporting that the lines will be redrawn.
So, Republicans of Butler County I ask you this: NOW WILL YOU VOTE THIS CHARLATAN OUT???
Why is this such a big deal? Shelton is consolidating her power base by minimizing the number of seats in Central Committee in Tea Party areas of the county. Having Dave Kern as Executive Chairman is nice and all, but if the Tea Party wants to wield actual power in this county, they have to get Judy Shelton replaced with someone who holds real conservative values.

Jolly Not an Independent
Greg Jolivette is a nice guy. And I like nice guys, even in politics. Especially in politics. But Jolly ain't an independent and trying to claim so because you failed to properly submit your petitions is just downright not nice.
So, yeah, you will have to imagine my surprise that Secretary of State Jonny Husted actually did do the right thing and broke the Board of Elections tie with a vote to keep Jolly off the ballot as an independent.
Yes, I am happy that former WMD contributor Wes Retherford has a better shot to win now that Jolly won't be splitting the R vote.
You can read Jonny here. The Journal-News story is here.

BUTLER COUNTY: Democrat Indicted for Theft in Office
I just want to make sure that everyone is aware that this leader of the Elections Board that just got indicted for theft in office is a Democrat. I have to reiterate that point because most folks seem to think that if there is trouble in Butler County, a Republican has to be involved. Yes, I blame the lamestream media for that too...
Channel 12 coverage is here. And Cincinnati Enquirer coverage is here.
Where is Mikey Pitman's coverage for the local rag? Sure can't find anything here. Wonder why that is.....
Speaking of the local rag, I'll mention this totally non-related incident, but since it was a Butler County Democrat story, we can run even more people through the mud and remind everyone of the Butler County Democratic Party chairman who was charged with a DUI. The Ron Wardrup Party strikes again. I'm sure I'll see mention of this whenever Mikey gets around to writing up his story.....no, I'm not holding my breath, why do you ask?
UPDATE: Yup, no Ron Wardrup sighting...you could count on a Rawnica Dillingham / Kay Rogers / Mike Fox reference if this were about a Republican, but since it is a Democrat, it's just another "in a line of Butler County elected official scandals." That's objective journalism! ...or something. Oh, wait, check out page 2:

Un-frakking-believable.Earlier this month, former county Commissioner Greg Jolivette was reprimanded by the Ohio Ethics Commission and ordered to repay the county $6,629.66 for voting to hire his son as a summer intern. County Coroner Dr. Richard Burkhardt recently surrendered his ability to write prescriptions after the state medical board discovered he had not properly documented medicines prescribed to his employees.
Former Commissioner and Children Services Director Mike Fox and former Auditor Kay Rogers are awaiting sentencing for their roles in the Dynus and NORMAP fiber-optics scandals. And in 2007, Carole Mosketti resigned as county treasurer after pleading guilty to an ethics violation for hiring her granddaughter.

Jenny Targets Butler County
Our good friend Scott has the story from the Journal-News that Jennifer Brunner is targetting Butler County. I guess there are just too many Republicans in Butler County that vote...I strongly support our Board of Elections. Not just in Butler, but in all of Ohio's 88 counties. Jenny ought to stop playing partisan politics, but she just can't help herself. Like Dick Cordray and Marc Dann, Jenny is all about getting her name in the paper. Any paper. And as usual, the 527 media in this state is more than willing to accommodate...
