The Butler County Seat in Congress

Auditor and Great American Roger Reynolds
As you all know, with John Boehner's coming retirement there is a HUGE opportunity for somebody to step onto a MUCH larger stage.  With that in mind, the Butler County Republican Party has some BIG shoes to fill and as the county with the largest population in the district, they also have greater responsibility to choose wisely.  It is great to hear that the party leadership has chosen to not endorse any particular candidate and allow the membership to make that decision without undue command influence.

Why is it important for Butler County to represented by one of their own?  Should their congressman be from somewhere else, it becomes possible that the area gets split during redistricting and the county could lose a lot.  Butler county has always been a strong, mostly conservative turnout.  Other areas could try to chip off that support in order to strengthen their own positions.

Since I no longer live in Butler County, the preceding paragraph really doesn't hold much weight with me as an argument.  What does, is making sure that the Eighth Congressional District gets the very best representative that it possibly can and in my opinion, that means Roger Reynolds.

Roger has integrity.  He's intelligent and has the courage to do what needs to be done.  He's a fighter for conservative principles.  He believes government should be small and efficient.  There are maybe five politicians in this whole state whom I would quit my job and go work for if asked, Roger is one of them.  He's THAT GOOD.

Butler County Republicans, I urge you to unite behind Roger Reynolds and make Congress better.

Forkin The Road Report on Boehner, ORP, and the Tea Party

THIS is a MUST READ.

Most interesting tidbit:

When the Tea Party first arrived on the scene in 2009, I was given the un-glorious task of identifying exactly what the Tea Party was, who they were, what they wanted and then devising a recommended plan of action on the best way to handle the new group.
I was told, and rightly so, that political leaders in other states and in D.C. were watching Ohio in particular to see how the GOP was handling this new group.
I put together a nice report outlining who the group was, what they wanted and then made recommendations on the best way to handle the Tea Party.
Many party leaders, and consequently then members of the media, wanted to incorrectly label the movement as just born-again members of the John Birch Society, or a vast uprising of only social conservatives, or the born-again version of the Know-Nothings, or paid puppets of Dick Armey.
I tried to explain that there was no reference point in history that could be used to define the Tea Party – it was a unique mix of solidly principled people that consisted of not just Republicans, but Democrats and Independents as well.
My advice was to make them feel as though they had a seat at the table, make them feel welcomed and that they had a voice that was not only listened to, but considered and sometimes acted upon.
I advised against the eventual tactic, which was to not only defeat the Republican Tea Partiers, but utterly destroy any future hopes of political success by absolutely crushing them in the 2010 primaries.
The term used by people on the inside to describe the eventual plan was ‘scorched-earth tactics’

The last sentence was emphasized by me because it is just that important.

Read the whole thing to find out what happened next because this guy called it...just as I did.

Spotlight is Out

Just caught this on Facebook:

A message from Sheriff Jones...
With the sudden resignation of the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, I was asked by a number of people to run for his seat in Congress. Over the last week I’ve discussed this proposition with many of my trusted friends and family. I’ve been fortunate to receive an enormous amount of support from citizens in and around Butler County. With Congress having an overall approval rating of about 15% they could use someone like me who’s willing to speak their mind and stir things up.
My passion has always been serving my County and Country. I’ve decided that, right now, the best way to do that is to remain Sheriff. Someday my future may take a different path, but I’m extremely proud to be Sheriff of Butler County and I truly appreciate the outpouring of support I’ve received over the years and specifically the last few weeks.
Richard K. Jones
Sheriff, Butler County, Ohio

I guess there wasn't enough publicity in it...

Roger Reynolds is the best candidate anyway...

The Boehner Circus

The List (via Cincinnati Enquirer) is long and getting longer...

  • Sheriff Richard "Spotlight" Jones - Get serious...
  • Bill Coley - The former state representative topped insiders' lists for who might run...He didn't respond Friday to requests for comment."
  • Tim Derickson - Term limited in Ohio House - "I in no way could have anticipated this possibility, but now that it is an open seat, I'm seriously considering a run for that seat."
  • Ross MacGregor - "Some people label me 'liberal.' I prefer 'moderate."
  • Kieth Faber - Lives outside the district - "A spokesman for Faber declined to comment."
  • J.D. Winteregg - "I'm not afraid to confront people on different issues, and that's what the Republican Party needs."
  • Wes Retherford - "I really haven't had a chance to collect my thoughts."
  • Seth Morgan - "I don't know if I'm ready to say one way or the other."
  • Chris Widener
  • Bill Beagle - Just announced he's in today.
  • Roger Reynolds - "At this point, that's not something I'm prepared to talk about." - 9/30 UPDATE: He's in.  Everybody else should drop out.  This is the guy!
  • Joe Deters - Lives outside the district - "No chance"
  • Not in the Enquirer article, but heard elsewhere: Steve Austria
Even though it is not a requirement for Congressman to live in the districts they represent,. I --and many people who still live in the district-- prefer that they do.  That will eliminate a few from the list.

Keep an eye on Coley.  Once he makes his decision, that will determine who stays and who goes.

I fully expect the Ohio Republican Party to try and push Faber on to the scene.  Expect the people in the district to tell the party to get bent.  Pound sand.  Go away.  But they'll try it anyway.

Derickson should get in because after having developed so far as a legislator, it would be a shame to waste the talent.

Spotlight and Winteregg will provide all of the comedy...

I picked a fabulous time to return to blogging......

Speaker of the House, My (Former) Congressman, and a Great American to Retire in October

By now, just about everybody has had the BREAKING NEWS that the Speaker of the House, my (former) Congressman, and a Great American, John Boehner, will be retiring at the end of October.

I choose to remember Boehner as the energetic guy with the drive to advance a conservative agenda to stop the Obama-Reid-Pelosi onslaught rather than the exhausted man he has become.

Boehner was the vanguard of the Republican comeback in Washington DC.  Before his selection as Speaker, Republicans (and conservatives) had NOTHING.  No place in government beyond being the minority in all three branches of government (because let's face it, conservatives don't even have the Supreme Court).

A lot of people gave him grief, even early on when Republicans controlled only one-half or one-third of government.  But I gave him the benefit of the doubt.  We needed the Senate to really get things done.  That's what the professional Republicans told us.  And a lot of us believed it.

Well, we got the Senate and still nothing happened.  And then those same professional Republicans said, "Now we need the White House to get stuff done."

I remember the last time Republicans ran the table.  We got higher taxes, more government, and the Big Tent.  A lot of us aren't buying what the professional Republicans are selling.

About this time is when I started noticing that Speaker Boehner seemed a bit tired.  Like, even he wasn't buying this stuff anymore.

This is a good man who has had to deal with some of the worst American politics -- on both sides of the aisle -- has had to offer.  And for the most part, Boehner handled his duties with grace and humility.  Occasionally, a bad word or two.

In the end, for me, Boehner's legacy is best summed up in this video clip that I took before he became Speaker.

Mr. Speaker, thank you for your service to your nation, the great state of Ohio, and the Eighth District and may you enjoy your retirement.

Speaker Boehner on Pope Francis’ Address to Congress

WASHINGTON, DC – Speaker John Boehner (R-West Chester) today welcomed Pope Francis to the United States Capitol, where he became the first Pope to ever address a joint meeting of Congress.  After the Pope’s visit, Boehner issued the following statement:

“What a day.  What a moment for our country.  I’m so proud that so many came to greet the Pope here at our Capitol, the world’s greatest symbol of democracy.  The Holy Father’s visit is surely a blessing for all of us.  With great blessings, of course, come great responsibility.  Let us all go forth with gratitude and reflect on how we can better serve one another.  Let us all go forth and live up to the words, God bless America.”

Boehner Threatens to Sue Obama over Iran Deal; Nobody Believes Him

The Daily Signal:
Boehner said the president did not disclose every piece of the accord to Congress as required by law and that a lawsuit over the deal is “an option that is very possible.”

“If you read the provisions in [the congressional review law], it’s pretty clear that the president has not complied,” Boehner said during his weekly press conference Thursday. “Because it makes clear that any side agreements and any other type of an agreement—including those that do not directly involve us—must be turned over as part of it. I do not believe that he’s complied.”
Maybe the Tan Man needs to cry more when he delivers these pronouncements because NOBODY is buying what he's selling.

NOBODY.

Meanwhile, the Washington Post says the Speaker is too busy battling...wait for it...conservatives in his own party.
“The people considering this are being totally irresponsible, but Boehner’s guys, we’re getting ready for whatever may come — not out of fear, but with exasperation about what some Republicans are willing to do to their own party,” said Rep. Peter T. King (R-N.Y.), who is part of the speaker’s circle of unofficial advisers.
Now THIS I believe. The only time the Republican establishment ever has any backbone whatsoever is when they are facing off against conservative Republicans who actually want to do something with the GOP Platform rather than just ignore it.

When will leadership, at any level of the Republican Party, start fighting Democrats with the same level of vigor as they do against conservatives?

It's a mystery.

Boehner Claims He'll Fight Obamacare; Nobody Believes Him

Press Release from Team Boehner:
Here is what you need to know:
  • Last year, the House passed legislation authorizing the House to file litigation challenging President Obama’s unilateral changes to ObamaCare. Litigation was filed on November 21, 2014, and oral arguments were first heard in House v. Burwell in Washington, DC on May 28, 2015.
  • On September 9, 2015, a federal court ruled that the House of Representatives has standing to challenge one of President Obama’s unilateral changes to ObamaCare.
  • Under the leadership of Speaker Boehner, this is the first time in Congressional history that the House has successfully challenged the Executive Branch in this manner.
How is President Obama ignoring the rule of law?
  • The Obama Administration is unlawfully giving away billions of taxpayer dollars to insurance companies. This is money that was never appropriated, so the administration is using taxpayer funds from a separate account, subverting Congress’s “power of the purse.”
What does this ruling mean?
  • This is a big victory: The House can now move forward and challenge the president’s unlawful implementation of ObamaCare.
Time and again, the president has chosen to ignore the will of the American people and re-write the law on his own without a vote of Congress. That’s not the way our system of government was designed to work. That is why Congressman Boehner will continue to lead the charge in protecting the Constitution and stopping President Obama’s executive overreach.
I've heard all of this before.  He's tough.  He'll cry his way to victory...or something.  I've seen this movie and I know how it ends: With the Tan Man caving...again...to Obama while America still suffers the effects.

This and That or Matt Checks In

I've been off the grid for a bit, but still keeping up on the news and other goings on as I moved TIB Central Command to its new super secret location. I wanted to take a few minutes of your precious time to comment on a few things that have been thrust upon my radar...

BUTLER COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS:

It is no secret that Butler County's government is in no danger of running short of shenanigans, but this latest episode demonstrates just how very little progress has been made in reforming local government. Once again, we learn of backroom deals that benefit politicians and their families and the people whom we have placed our public trust are screwing us. Still. After all these years and after all the examples of what happens when politicians finally get caught, there are still clowns who insist on playing these same old games.

Sure...it happens everywhere. I'm no fool, no matter what the establishment will try to get you to believe. But I took some measure of pride in shining a candle's worth of light in to the dark recesses of Butler County's tomfoolery and it pains me that even after expending so many pixels here on the subject, we really haven't made that much progress in rooting out the disease that plagues the county.

So, yeah, put me down in the column of favoring a ray or three of sunshine on to the dark space that is the Butler County Board of Elections. I can only hope that a few more politicians learn that nepotism and chicanery is no way to run government.

And if, by some strange coincidence, you have been living under a rock (like I have the last few weeks) and have no idea what this is about, go over to the Journal-News site and run a search on Board of Elections.

SIDEBAR: Mike Gmoser is En Fuego. Go get 'em!

"Thingamabobs Have Consequences" by Jonah Goldberg:
...the minimum wage is a boon to robots. If you make human labor more expensive, non-human labor becomes more attractive. If you tell car-wash owners that they have to pay their employees $100 an hour, the owner will most likely search his desk for that business card from that salesman from Acme Robots.
The above is a short excerpt from the opening paragraph from Jonah's G-File "e-newsletter" that hit my inbox today. Since POTUS is trying to divert attention from his crummy website for his even more diabolical signature legislation with more prattle on increasing the minimum wage, I thought it relevant to let someone else say what I've been telling you all for years: Increasing the minimum wage is the best way to increase unemployment amongst the already hardest hit segments of our population...but don't let the truth stop liberals from distracting us from more important stuff with even more promises of "free" stuff. Because that's never been done before...

APOCALYPTIC CONSERVATISM?

My immediate reaction to a National Review (dead tree edition or I'd link to it) piece by Lowery and Ponnuru is to point out that there is a difference between grassroots activists and the "elite" few engaged in party politics. That's why there are so many squabbles between the "Republican Party" and the "Tea Party" people. The GOP has an agenda to win elections. The TP's agenda is all about ideology. As a guy who straddled both worlds, I can say that neither position is necessarily right at any given time. Instead of treating the TP like some doody left on the front yard, maybe the GOP ought to find better ways of explaining their pragmatism to the TP. I've always said that the TP has a problem with patience and their inexperience with politics has been their worst enemy.

The piece was about the defunding Obamacare fight and as usual you can count on National Review to wag their finger at any conservative who dares to stand on principle and fight the good fight for the sake of fighting a good fight against an administration hellbent on destroying our way of life with an agenda so far left it makes Stalin look like a righty. I could appreciate their position more if they would actually promote an alternative strategy other than "Roll over and take it." but they don't.

Say what you want about the new guys with the R at the end of their names (and I have); but, for the most part, they aren't in DC to gain new friends and attend parties. We're in serious trouble in this country and if we don't stop messing around, we're going to lose everything. So while I can understand the thought process behind picking your battles for a political win, I also firmly back ANY fight that stands in opposition to the further destruction of our values and freedom.

A point made in the article is that conservatives alone are not sufficiently strong enough in numbers to win on their own. And that is true. But let me point out that there are more conservatives in this country than any other ideology. That has to count for something. When the establishment continually evaluates their losses as excuses to turn left, somebody needs to remind the establishment that by drawing in more "moderates" you turn off that base of support that makes the party viable in the first place. Democrats don't do this. They don't look at a loss and say, "We need to get more conservative." No. They double down on their principles and give us Obama. Twice. Heck, that Nancy Pelosi still holds a leadership position ought to tell you all you need to know about that.

My advice to both sides is to stop hurting each other and find ways to work on the things that we agree on while we talk about the things that we don't. Rome wasn't built in a day. Show some patience. Politics is a marathon, not a sprint.

BOEHNER ON IMMIGRATION:

Seriously?

Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot.

It's all I got on that... I have no idea what he's doing.

I am not at all pleased with what I've seen so far. Hiring a McCainite Shamnesty Cheerleader isn't encouraging.

Still kinda hoping this is all some sort of grand strategery intended to bluff Obama on the issue, but I know better...

John Boehner Pulls a John Kerry on Congressional Health Subsidies

"I was actually for Congress getting bailed out of Obamacare before I was against it."  That seems to be the view of John Boehner, at least according to emails leaked by Harry Reid's staffers.

Leaked emails between Harry Reid's office and John Boehner's show that the Speaker of the House appears to be flip flopping all over the place when it comes to whether or not Congress and staff should get subsidies to help pay for their health coverage under Obamacare.  The Speaker has been the target of conservatives for a while now, and this will not help his case with the Right of Center.  From the Politico:

With the federal government nearing shutdown, House Speaker John Boehner stood on the House floor Monday and called on his colleagues to vote for a bill banning a “so-called exemption” that lawmakers and staffers receive for their health insurance.
“Why don’t we make sure that every American is treated just like we are?” Boehner asked, seeking to prohibit members of Congress and Capitol Hill aides from getting thousands of dollars in subsidies for their health insurance as they join Obamacare-mandated insurance exchanges.
Yet behind-the-scenes, Boehner and his aides worked for months with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), and others, to save these very same, long-standing subsidies, according to documents and e-mails provided to POLITICO. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was also aware of these discussions, the documents show.
So, Mitch McConnell was in on it, too, eh?  This is no surprise to anyone who has followed the career of the spineless McConnell, who claimed to want to remove Obamacare "root and branch" in campaign commercials even while not supporting the efforts of Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, and others to do just that.

What is surprising is the sinister and even conspiratorial nature of the emails between Boehner's and Reid's offices:

Boehner’s aides vehemently deny that the speaker’s private efforts contradict his public statements on the issue. They insist Democrats were the ones who enacted Obamacare and it is up to them to address the problem. Boehner said the White House should correct the problem though through an administrative solution, stating that no bill to do so could pass Congress.
(WATCH: Rep. Larson's passionate floor speech)
“We always made it clear that the House would not pass any legislative ‘fix,’” said Michael Steel, Boehner’s spokesman, on Monday night.
“As POLITICO has previously reported, Speaker Boehner was aware that Sen. Reid and the White House were discussing this issue. He was always clear, however, that any ‘fix’ would be a Democratic ‘fix.’ His ‘fix’ is repealing” Obamacare.
But according to several sources in attendance at a mid-July meeting with Reid, Boehner wondered aloud at one point whether he and the Nevada Democrat could quietly slip some language into a bill to end the problem without it receiving any public attention.

“When I was in the state legislature, we used to stick things in [bills] and no one would notice,” Boehner said during a private meeting with Reid in July to discuss this issue, the sources said.
Boehner’s aides then told him this would not be possible, so the idea was dropped.
The speaker and his chief of staff, Mike Sommers — who was at that July 17 meeting as well — cannot “recall the Speaker making such a comment,” Boehner’s office said.

And, even having faux immigration meetings to discuss getting congressional bailout on Obamacare:

In mid-July, as Boehner and Reid were trying to schedule a private meeting with Obama on the super-sensitive topic, the speaker’s top aide said it was okay to use a cover story to conceal the true nature of that prospective White House gathering.
“We can’t let it get out there that this is for [Boehner] and [Reid] to ask the President to carve us out of the requirement of Obamacare,” Sommers told David Krone, Reid’s top aide in a July 17 e-mail obtained by POLITICO.
“This is a little bit more difficult because it isn’t a routine meeting, as [Nancy] Pelosi and [Mitch] McConnell won’t be there. I am even ok if it is the President hauling us down to talk about the next steps on immigration.”
After Krone suggested that the White House press office might float that the Boehner-Reid-Obama meeting was on immigration, Sommers said he wasn’t concerned about what cover story was just as long as the real reason behind the meeting wasn’t disclosed.
“I really don’t care what is is about[,] it just can’t be about what we know it is about!” Sommers told Krone.
That meeting with Obama never took place.
Boehner and Reid’s offices also circulated some draft legislation to fix the problem, although none was ever introduced. They considered — briefly and “not seriously,” according to the speaker’s office — making all House staffers part of the “Committee of the Whole” in order to get around the insurance-exchange requirement. Committee staffers were not required to enroll in exchanges.
Boehner and Reid’s staffers also discussed “grandfathering” all members of Congress into the Federal Employee Benefit Health Plan, their current insurance program, so they didn’t have to enroll in the Obamacare exchanges. That idea was eventually dropped as well.
Boehner’s office said the leak of private e-mails to POLITICO shows how concerned Democrats are about the matter.

Boehner appears ready and able to screw his constituents and the American people if it benefits himself or wins favors, as this calls to mind the reports that he personally gave Obama advice on how to win Republicans over to the effort to bomb Syria back in September.

Boehner cannot be trusted to do what is right for Constitutional constructionists or conservatives.  Glenn Beck has demanded that Boehner resign from his Speakership, and I must say, the more I read about just how much Boehner wanted his own subsidy and really didn't seem too interested in killing Obamacare, the more I am inclined to agree.

Boehner on SOTU

Release:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) released this statement following tonight’s State of the Union address and Republican address to the nation:

“Four years after the president first addressed a joint session of Congress, Americans are still asking, ‘where are the jobs?’ Tonight, he offered them little more than more of the same ‘stimulus’ policies that have failed to fix our economy and put Americans back to work. We cannot grow the middle class and foster job creation by growing government and raising taxes. Washington has a spending problem that threatens the prosperity of every child, every family, and every small business in America. The president had an opportunity to offer a solution tonight, and he let it slip by. We are only weeks away from the devastating consequences of the president’s sequester, and he failed to offer the cuts needed to replace it. In the last election, voters chose divided government which offers a mandate only to work together to find common ground. The president, instead, appears to have chosen a go-it-alone approach to pursue his liberal agenda.

“Senator Rubio rose to the occasion tonight and presented a positive alternative to the American middle class. His vision for growth, opportunity, and prosperity is rooted in the understanding that it is our people, not our government, that continues to give us confidence in America’s future.”

GUEST COLUMN: "A Simple Principle: No Budget, No Pay" by Speaker Boehner #NoBudgetNoPay

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) released the following column discussing legislation that will require both the House and Senate to pass a budget, and withhold member pay if they fail:

“When I and my Republican colleagues were entrusted with the majority in the House of Representatives in 2010, we committed ourselves to addressing our nation's debt problem and re-establishing trust between the American people and their elected leaders.

“Always mindful of those goals, we've passed a budget for the country every year that would lower the deficit and cut spending to begin solving the debt problem that is hurting our economy and threatening our children's future.

“This year we will again pass a budget for the nation that meets these goals. And this time, it is essential that the Democratic-controlled Senate pass a budget this year as well -- something it hasn't done in nearly four years.

“As Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), currently the House Minority Whip, correctly declared in 2006, passing a budget for the country is the most basic responsibility of governing.

“The 1974 Congressional Budget Act requires passage of a budget resolution by April 15 each year. Under Democrats' control, the Senate has refused to pass a budget for 1,360 days. At a time when uncontrolled spending is dragging down our economy, such a record of inaction is unconscionable.

“As we look to 2013, the American people continue to demand that Washington get serious about fiscal responsibility. Both parties and both chambers of Congress must heed this call by passing a budget. If they don't, they shouldn't be paid.

“It's a simple principle: no budget, no pay.

“President Obama is again demanding an increase in the nation's debt ceiling, and refusing to discuss the possibility of enacting spending cuts along with it to lower our debt.

“The president is right that we cannot allow our nation to default on its debts. But he's totally wrong when he says the debt limit should be increased without reducing government spending at the same time.

“A long-term increase in the debt limit that is not preceded by meaningful and responsible reductions in government spending might avert a national default, but it would also invite a downgrade of our nation’s credit that damages our economy, hurts families and small businesses, and destroys jobs.

“With that in mind, House Republicans have united around the principle that before there is any long-term debt limit increase, a budget should be passed that cuts spending. The House will adhere to this principle. The Senate must as well.

“The Democratic-controlled Senate has failed to pass a budget for four years. That is a shameful run that needs to end, this year.

“We are going to pursue strategies that will obligate the Senate to finally join the House in confronting the government’s spending problem.

“Every American family and small business has a budget. The House and Senate must as well.

“In the coming days, the House will consider legislation to temporarily raise the debt ceiling for three months, and set up a broader debate about spending that obligates the Senate to finally join the House in confronting the government's spending problem. The bill will require both the House and Senate to pass a budget, and member pay will be withheld if they fail.

“I know from the letters and emails I receive that this stance enjoys strong support among the people of our congressional district.

“Daryl from Lewisburg, OH, for example, wrote to me on January 17, saying he wants to see a ‘no budget, no pay’ plan enacted to not only encourage our leaders to set our nation on a more stable course, but also to restore the American people’s trust in their national legislature.

“I’ve heard your concerns, and we are taking a first step towards serious action to address the threat posed by our debt and deficit. We've even adopted a Twitter hashtag for this effort: #NoBudgetNoPay.

“There will be more. This is the debate our country needs.

“Republicans will hold the president and his Senate accountable for their failures on the budget and press for real action to lower spending. We must take these steps together so we can begin to solve the debt problem that endangers our children's future.”

Boehner represents Ohio’s 8th District, which includes all of Butler, Clark, Darke, Miami, and Preble counties, and the southernmost part of Mercer County. He was first elected to Congress in 1990.

Speaker Boehner Addresses the Opening Session of the 113th Congress

Release:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following is the full text of House Speaker John Boehner’s (R-OH) address to the opening session of the 113th Congress, as prepared for delivery:

“Leader Pelosi, members of the House and Senate, dear family and friends, fellow countrymen:

“We meet again at democracy’s great port of call. Every two years, at this hour, the Constitution brings a new order to this House. It is an interlude for reflection, a glimpse of old truths.

“To our new members and their families, welcome. You are likely feeling awestruck right about now. History runs through here. And now you are among a select few to share in this privilege.

“For those who are returning, who have walked these aisles before, maybe it’s time we feel awestruck again.

“The way our founders envisioned it, the republic would be led by citizens who recognize that the blessing of governing ourselves requires that we give something of ourselves. Everything depended on this. So they made each other – and their successors – swear an oath of allegiance.

“In a few moments, I will take this oath for the twelfth time as representative of the Eighth District of Ohio. It is word for word the same oath we all take.

“Note that it makes no mention of party, faction, or title … contains no reference to agendas or platforms – only to the Constitution

“The one addition we dare to make, as George Washington did at the first inaugural, is to invoke the assistance of our Heavenly Father.

“This covenant makes us servants of posterity. It calls us to refuse the pull of passing interests and follow the fixed star of a more perfect union.

“Put simply, we are sent here not to be something, but to do something – to do the right thing.

“It’s a big job, and it comes with big challenges.

“Our government has built up too much debt. Our economy is not producing enough jobs. These are not separate problems.

“At $16 trillion and rising, our national debt is draining free enterprise and weakening the ship of state.

“The American Dream is in peril so long as its namesake is weighed down by this anchor of debt. Break its hold, and we begin to set our economy free. Jobs will come home. Confidence will come back.

“We do this not just to boost GDP or reduce unemployment, but to secure for our children a future of freedom and opportunity. Nothing is more important.

“As Washington wrote in his farewell address, we should not 'throw upon posterity the burden which we ourselves ought to bear.'

“Well, the burden is ours and so is the opportunity.

“There is no substitute for the wisdom of the people. We are their servants. As Speaker, I pledge to listen and do all I can to help you carry out the oath you are about to take.

“Because in our hearts, we know it is wrong to pass on this debt to our kids and grandkids. Now we have to be willing – truly willing – to make this right.

“Public service was never meant to be an easy living. Extraordinary challenges demand extraordinary leadership.

“So if you have come here to see your name in lights or to pass off political victory as accomplishment, you have come to the wrong place. The door is behind you.

“If you have come here humbled by the opportunity to serve; if you have come here to be the determined voice of the people; if you have come here to carry the standard of leadership demanded not just by our constituents but by the times, then you have come to the right place.

“There is a time for every purpose under Heaven. For the 113th Congress, it is a time to rise. When the day is over, and the verdict is read, may it be said that we well and faithfully did our duty to ensure freedom will endure and prevail.

“So help us God.”

Statements on Jobs Numbers

Speaker John Boehner:
“Two years after the Obama administration declared, ‘welcome to the recovery,’ this much is clear: with 42 consecutive months of unemployment above eight percent, the private sector still isn’t ‘doing fine’ and President Obama’s economic plan did not work. While the president is telling small businesses ‘you didn’t build that,’ his policies are making sure they can’t.

“Any new job creation is welcome news -- but with unemployment still above eight percent and rising, and millions of Americans looking for work, it is insane to raise taxes on small businesses, as the president and his allies in the Democratic-controlled Senate propose. Ernst & Young says their tax hike will destroy more than 700,000 jobs. And yet, top Democrats say they’re willing to let taxes rise on middle class families, tank our economy, and impose devastating cuts to our national security if they don’t get their way. It’s reckless, it’s wrong, and House Republicans aren’t standing for it.

“A group of 88 American economists warned that we need to stop all of the tax hikes scheduled for January 1 to prevent more damage to our economy. A bipartisan majority in the House voted to do so, and to make sure no middle class family or small business sees a tax increase. We also voted in May to replace the ‘sequester’ defense cuts insisted on by the president. The House is ready to act at a moment’s notice this August on these, and the more than 30 jobs bills we’ve passed, if Senate Democrats get serious about addressing the threats to our economy and our national security.”

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus:
"Last week President Obama said, 'We tried our plan, and it worked.' With the unemployment rate going up again, it's obvious that plan didn't work at all," said RNC Chairman Reince Priebus.

"Instead of supporting American innovation and job creation, he has squandered taxpayer money on failed companies like Solyndra, which led to job losses. It's no wonder we can't end this economic nightmare. The president continues to take us in the wrong direction.

"In a time of widespread economic hardship, the president's schedule has not included a 'Daily Economic Briefing' since April of 2011. He has not convened his Jobs Council in over six months, yet he has found time for over 120 political fundraisers and 11 rounds of golf since their last meeting.

"President Obama's only plans for a second term are higher taxes and more spending--exactly the opposite of what we need. On Day One of his presidency, Mitt Romney will get to work implementing his comprehensive jobs plan to turn around the economy."

ORP Chairman Bob Bennett:
"Forty-two straight months of bad unemployment numbers underscores that the private sector is not doing fine. Now is the time for President Obama to stop strong-arming Congress into raising taxes on small businesses, which Ernst & Young says threatens to destroy more than 700,000 jobs.

"With so many job creators and middle-class families struggling in the Obama economy, Americans deserve a president who will put job creation first. That's why we need Mitt Romney's vision for prosperity in the White House."

Congressman Bob Gibbs:
“The Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that the unemployment rate has risen once again, reaching 8.3 percent during the month of July. The unemployment rate in this country has hovered above eight percent for 42 straight months now, and that is unacceptable. President Obama’s misguided policies have continued to lead us further into the worst unemployment crisis since the Great Depression, and the American people have endured this long enough.

“Instead of facing the reality that millions of Americans are out of a job and our economy is suffering, Democrats are pushing a destructive agenda that includes a massive tax hike at the end of this year that would result in an increase in taxes on small businesses of $232 billion in 2013. Obama’s tax hike would cost the economy 710,000 jobs. Americans are desperate for new direction.

“I voted last week for the Red Tape Reduction and Small Business Job Creation Act, which would decrease the Obama Administration’s ability to place harmful regulations on America’s small businesses. By combating the red tape that restrains our economy, House Republicans are working hard to get America back to work.

“The Obama Administration’s job-killing policies have plagued this country for far too long, and July’s unemployment report is a direct result of his failed principles. Republicans need to take the reins this November and ensure that these harmful regulations come to an end.”

Right of Conscience Regarding Obamacare and Repeal

Kathryn Jean Lopez at the Corner:
it, of course, does not solve the problem before us: the erosion of religious liberty in America. We are living right now in a country where Americans are about to be mandated by federal law to violate their consciences or pay up for the privilege to exercise religious liberty. (Which Nebraska congressman Jeff Fortenberry has been warning about for much more than a fortnight.) This, in a country where we used to believe God granted us that freedom and the government existed to protect it, and where congressmen are now trying to protect Americans by any legislative means possible. We’ve found ourselves at an outrageous point.

As the House votes to repeal Obamacare today, the text of the repeal language underscores the manipulation that was at the heart of the health-care legislation’s passage. They told us our consciences would be clear. Maybe, in some cases, if you pay for the privilege:

7) While President Obama promised that nothing in the law would fund elective abortion, the law expands the role of the Federal Government in funding and facilitating abortion and plans that cover abortion. The law appropriates billions of dollars in new funding without explicitly prohibiting the use of these funds for abortion, and it provides Federal subsidies for health plans covering elective abortions. Moreover, the law effectively forces millions of individuals to personally pay a separate abortion premium in violation of their sincerely held religious, ethical, or moral beliefs.

(8) Until enactment of the law, the Federal Government has not sought to impose specific coverage or care requirements that infringe on the rights of conscience of insurers, purchasers of insurance, plan sponsors, beneficiaries, and other stakeholders, such as individual or institutional health care providers. The law creates a new nationwide requirement for health plans to cover ‘‘essential health benefits’’ and ‘‘preventive services’’, but does not allow stakeholders to opt out of covering items or services to which they have a religious or moral objection, in violation of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (Public Law 103–141). By creating new barriers to health insurance and causing the loss of existing insurance arrangements, these inflexible mandates jeopardize the ability of institutions and individuals to exercise their rights of conscience and their ability to freely participate in the health insurance and health care marketplace.

This current Speaker has sought to be a guardian, but the House does not have the power to protect religious liberty on its own. It is now the upper house, and the White House, that remain obstacles. November matters; elections simply do.

Boehner on Unemployment Report

Release:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) released the following statement this morning regarding the Department of Labor’s unemployment report for June 2012:

“Today's report shows the private sector clearly isn’t ‘doing fine’ and that President Obama’s policies have failed. The president bet on a failed ‘stimulus’ spending binge that led to 41 months of unemployment above 8 percent. He bet on a government takeover of health care that’s driving up costs and making it harder for small businesses to hire. He even bet taxpayer dollars on companies like Solyndra while blocking popular projects like Keystone XL that would create tens of thousands of new American jobs.

“The president needs to stop betting on his failed policies and start working with Republicans to remove government obstacles to job creation. We’ve passed more than 30 jobs bills – he should call on Senate Democrats to stop stalling them. Next week we’ll vote to fully repeal the president’s health care law. And before the month is out, we’ll vote on legislation to curtail excessive government regulations.

“The House will also act this month to boost economic growth and create jobs by preventing the largest tax hike in history and providing a fairer, simpler tax code that lowers rates and closes special interest loopholes. This tax hike is scheduled to hit small businesses on January 1, and is already casting a shadow over our economy that will continue to grow until the president works with us to stop it. We won’t wait to act.

“Republicans are listening to the American people and continuing to put economic growth and job creation front and center. We need the president and Senate Democrats to do the same.”

Boehner on SCOTUS Decision

Release:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) released the following statement after the Supreme Court announced its ruling on the president’s health care law:

“The president’s health care law is hurting our economy by driving up health costs and making it harder for small businesses to hire. Today’s ruling underscores the urgency of repealing this harmful law in its entirety. What Americans want is a common-sense, step-by-step approach to health care reform that will protect Americans’ access to the care they need, from the doctor they choose, at a lower cost. Republicans stand ready to work with a president who will listen to the people and will not repeat the mistakes that gave our country ObamaCare.”

Boehner on May Jobs Report

Release:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman John Boehner (R-West Chester) released the following statement today regarding the Department of Labor’s unemployment report for May 2012:

“President Obama’s failed policies have made high unemployment and a weak economy the sad new normal for families and small businesses. For three years the unemployment rate has remained far above what the administration predicted with the ‘stimulus’ spending binge. Half of recent college graduates are out of work or underemployed, and for those lucky enough to have a job, prices for everything from gas to groceries have risen faster than paychecks.

“But the American people don’t have to accept the president’s new normal of fewer jobs and higher prices. Republicans have a Plan for America’s Job Creators designed to remove the government barriers holding back economic growth and hurting job creation. The House has passed more than 30 jobs bills to expand energy production and approve popular projects like Keystone XL, eliminate excessive federal red tape, repeal laws like ObamaCare that are making it harder for small businesses to hire new workers, and more.

“While Senate Democrats are blocking these and other important jobs bills, and President Obama is occupied campaigning, the House will continue to focus on liberating job creators and building a stronger economy for all Americans. In the weeks ahead, we will vote to repeal ObamaCare’s medical device tax, impose a moratorium on new federal regulations, and stop the tax hike on small businesses that is scheduled to hit on January 1, 2013. The American people are still asking, ‘where are the jobs?’ Republicans are listening. It’s time for President Obama and Senate Democrats to stop playing games and start listening too.”
