Kerry/Edwards: Berger Leak from White House

Source
Democrat John Kerry's presidential campaign accused the Bush White House on Wednesday of disclosing the existence of a criminal investigation against former national security adviser Sandy Berger for political advantage.

The objective of such a leak, the Kerry campaign said in a political memo distributed by email, was to take attention away from a report to be issued on Thursday by the commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The criminal investigation of Berger began last October but only came to light this week.

"The timing of this leak suggests that the White House is more concerned about protecting its political hide than hearing what the commission has to say about strengthening our security," the Kerry campaign said.

Matt's Chat

If the White House or Bush/Cheney were to use this leak for political purposes, they would use it as an October Surprise. Kind of like what the Gore campaign tried to do with the Bush drunk driving allegations in 2000.

Kerry/Edwards asserts that this leak came from the White House because of the 9/11 Commission report that is due out shortly, but apparently Kerry/Edwards isn't checking media reports because it has been leaked that neither Bush or Clinton will get the blame. Congress gets the major scolding.

This is misdirection. Democrats leaked this in order to engage in damage control. This conclusion is far more reasonable than the smoke screen Kerry/Edwards is peddling. Next week, the story is going to be the convention not Sandy Berger. At least that is the plan for Democrats. Trying to blame the White House is more Hannity memo stuff. Nice try...
