Syria to Seal Border with Iraq

From the BBC:
Iraq says it has reached an agreement with Syria to seal their long desert border and stop the infiltration of foreign insurgents.

Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Barham Saleh announced the move after talks in Damascus with President Bashar Assad.

He said the Syrian leader had assured him that Damascus would try to prevent any kind of infiltration.

Mr Saleh added that the border would be controlled from both sides, with the use of special security forces.

"We have agreed that specialised security forces would co-operate to investigate the issue of the infiltration of terrorists to launch military operations, and to prevent all aspects of infiltration," he told reporters.

Matt's Chat

This is a key to the final victory for the Iraqi people. If a similar deal can be made with Iran, then Iraqi forces with coalition assistance should be able to shore up the security situation.

The rumors that the Baath Party will get some political power should ease some tensions with that group, which will also help the situation.

So far, I'd have to give the new government of Iraq an A+...

Mark's Remarks

However, I trust Syria's promises of stepped up border security as much as I believe Vicente Fox's crap about doing the same in Mexico to stop illegals. Don't bet on Syria living up to its words. However, the Iraqis are doing the right thing in seeking agreements and diplomacy, but I wouldn't bank on Syria being an honest broker.
