The United States and its allies are expected to face opposition from Russia and China in the U.N. Security Council for targeted sanctions to pressure government, militia and rebel forces to end the bloodshed in Sudan's Darfur region.Further proof that the UN is useless...this will go nowhere because Russia, China and Algeria have veto power. Somebody is going to have to form a coalition and do some "unilateral" action over there or another genocide will have been carried out on the UN's watch...
Junior diplomats on Tuesday begin a "walk through" of an eight-page U.S.-drafted resolution, which authorizes a large peacekeeping force in southern Sudan in hopes that a recent landmark accord there will spur peace in Darfur in the west.
Negotiations on the resolution are expected throughout the week and U.S. officials are hoping for a vote by the end of the month.
Council sources anticipate opposition from Russia and China, which have veto power, as well as Algeria. All three have rejected previous calls for sanctions to give Khartoum more time to rein in a pro-government militia, blamed for much of the killings, rape and pillaging.
Mark's Remarks
What do you expect, given the fearless leader of the UN's record? When he was the special diplomat to Rwanda, he allowed the genocide to go unchecked there, leaving UN soldiers, some of them Americans, to watch as the bloodshed went on. He allowed bombings aimed at ethnic cleansing to go unchecked in Yugoslavia. Kofi is a joke, the UN has become a joke. When you have to issue memos imploring your workers NOT to rape children and distribute child porn of said sex acts, then you know you are in trouble. Isn't it amazing how much the UN can talk a good game about the tragedies of war, but when the chance comes to prevent genocide--let's just sit on our hands and give the folks in Khartoum more time! More time? To do what, wipe out the population being targeted?!? This is an atrocity and another glaring example of the impotence and incompetence of the UN.
