Here are some excerpts from an article by Byron York of National Review about Senator KKK Byrd:
At times during MoveOn.org's "Rally for Fair Judges," held yesterday at the Washington Court Hotel near the Capitol, it was hard to tell if the left-wing organizing group had planned a political rally or a revival meeting.Senator KKK Byrd, you were missing your white sheet. Also, don't you know that a moveon.org rally is not the place to be invoking God? Most of them haven't been to a church except back with Al Gore when he was pimping out churches for Kerry.
But the star of the show was the 87-year-old senator from West Virginia, Robert Byrd, who had been an advocate of the "nuclear option" back in the 1970s, when his party was in the majority. Now, he opposes it with every fiber in his body, and he portrayed stopping the GOP as a religious crusade.
"Praise God!" Byrd yelled as he waved the copy of the Constitution he famously keeps in his coat pocket. "Hallelujah!"
The crowd erupted into hearty cheers. Byrd denounced what he called a Republican plan to "pack the courts" and said that "our Constitution is under attack." He exhorted everyone to take action.
"Speak out!"
"Tell the people!"
"We can't let them do it!"
When other speakers came to the podium, Byrd sat in a front-row seat, thrusting a shaking fist in the air and engaging in a church-style call-and-response. As Durbin spoke, for example, Byrd called out during nearly every sentence.
"You started a movement," Durbin told the crowd.
"Yes!" shouted Byrd.
"When I look at the people assembled here, I'm looking at democracy."
"Tell it!" shouted Byrd.
"It's about freedom," Durbin said.
"Yes!" shouted Byrd.
When Byrd began his performance, some in the audience didn't quite know what was going on — they were far back in the crowd and couldn't see who was calling out up front. The speakers didn't seem to get it, either. When MoveOn organizer Ben Brandzel warmed up the crowd by vowing that he would not surrender to a president trying to "sell out our democracy for right-wing corporate hack judges," Byrd yelled out, "No!"
"That's right, Senator Byrd," Brandzel said, looking a bit surprised.
But the comedy gets better...Courtesy of, again, the York article:
Kennedy, for example, referred to Barbara Boxer as Barbara Mikulski. He referred to William Myers, the Bush judicial nominee, as William Morris. And he kept telling the crowd to "speak truth to justice," apparently confusing that with the more common liberal exhortation to "speak truth to power."Don't get me wrong, both Barbs are butt ugly, but one is a toothpick and the other is a battleship. Come on Ted, put the beer goggles down. Better yet, why don't you simply fall down?
However, check out the awesome equivocation from Dusty Harry Reid, the miniscule and puppetlike leader of the MINORITY in the Senate: (courtesy of RadioBlogger)
The news reports today said that we want to shut down the Senate. There couldn't be anything further from the truth.Senator, you wouldn't know the truth if Robert Byrd pulled it out from under his white sheet. By the way, which is true, are you for personal accounts or against them?
You see, it is they who are doing it, not us. And you see, the way that this works...Huh? Is this something like the Jedi mind trick? Are Dimocraps that weakwilled, that the evil Sith Lord Karl Rove is manipulating their minds? Come on now, quit projecting...You are all sad and bitter that your Bush Guard story was fake, that your appeasement strategies were revealed, and the American people saw through your rhetoric....just take a pacifier and shut up...but oh, no, there is more....
I believe in checks and balances. I believe that rather than trying to change the Senate rules, we should be working to do something about health care for 45 million Americans who have none. Rather than trying to change the Senate rules, shouldn't we do something about public education? The answer is yes. Rather than changing the Senate rules, shouldn't we be concerned about the largest deficits in the history of the world? Rather than changing the Senate rules, shouldn't we be concerned about energy policy in this country? Yes.Where to start? Let's see, we are working on tort reform to lower costs, but you and your trial lawyer buddies are trying to block that. Let's see, we passed the most comprehensive overhaul of education, throwing out the garbage of the whole language method and using proven methods like phonics, and actually holding schools accountable, but you and your cronies in the NEA are seeking to destroy that, and also to keep parents from choosing to send their children to better schools....And deficits, well, if you hadn't added so much pork to bills, we wouldn't be in this problem. And Senator, shouldn't we be working on social security since it is going to go broke, instead of engaging in grandstanding so you and your fellow dimocan'ts can still feel important???? I guess not in the liberal world....
This is not about judges. It's about arrogance of power.I'll be darned....He actually called one right. This is about arrogance of power, on the part of Senate Democrats!!!!!
Eli (the founder of MoveOn) was right in everything, except he said for 200 years, this country has had the procedures that we're tyring to make sure are not eliminated. He's wrong, because it's been 217 years.
Yet another big lie from Dingy Harry....No one is attacking the fillibuster as a whole...What we are attacking is the arrogant presumption by these leftists that fillibustering nominations is in the Constitution. The Constitution gives 7 instances where a supermajority is required. Confirming nominees is not one of them. However, the Left is so wrapped up in its own sense of entitlement, they think this rule has been around (fillibustering the nominations process) for 217 years. Not true....According to my studies, it has only been around for about 40, and even then seldom used. No one is attempting to end the use of the fillibuster, which is one of the features of the Senate. What we are talking about is getting an up or down vote for judicial nominees, something the Senate is charged to do. However, the Left would like to hinder that duty merely for political purposes. These nominees have been vetted, they have had high ratings, but simply because of partisan politics, they have not been confirmed, and who loses? We, the people.
I have to acknowledge that we cannot win this battle.
Another actual truthful statement from Dingy Harry. They cannot win if we do not let them. We have to hold these people accountable. Trust me, they will be....They have not learned from the elections...they have not learned from the last time Senators threatened to shut down the government....
But for you, our voices would be drowned out by the shrill right of right-wing radio.
Wrong again, Dingy one. We love when liberals speak out. When they do, they showcase their true agenda. They showcase that they are a party of NO!!! They have no ideas, no agenda for chance.....they merely show that they are trying the same tired old things, as referenced by the constant droning on about Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, which I think by the way, is a great movie....
