Until there is some actual, you know, evidence to prove otherwise I'm going with the accident theory. Sgrena's driver apparently was acting in a manner that concerned US troops. I believe our guys tried to signal the car to stop, but in the situation, you have to pull the trigger. Sgrena's rescuers apparently didn't give the full story to coalition forces because US troops in the area weren't expecting them.So the Italians are all upset. They should be...the operation was a successful failure in that they got Sgrena out, but bungled the get away. But like most Europeans, they blame America first.
Italy is providing 3,000 troops to the coalition. Iraqi prime minister Allawi asked Italy to stay on asfter the January election, and they choose to do so. Pulling out now would be an affront to the Iraqis, not the Americans. But have at it Europe, pulling out is what you all do best these days.

9:50AM Update
Looks like the Italians DIDN'T inform the coalition what Calipari's mission was afterall...Both newspapers cited a report by Gen. Mario Marioli, an Italian who is the coalition forces' second-in-command. The report has been given to Rome prosecutors investigating the killing. As we say here in the States, "Now how much would you pay? But wait, there's MORE!"
According to the newspapers, Marioli informed U.S. officials that Calipari and the other Italian officer were there, but not that the mission was aimed at releasing Sgrena.
Mark's Remarks
This is a terrible tragedy that this intel officer was killed. However, Sgrena is using it to advance her own socialist agenda, and that makes me ill. This was a tragic accident. It was not the result of targetting. Why would we induce more bad press from Europe (not that I personally care for bad press from Europe)? I don't think that if we wanted no survivors we would have had Sgrena survive. We have some pretty fair sharpshooters in the States, you know? The fact of the matter is Italy did some dealing with terrorists. They did not want us to know the full level of their kowtowing to the terrorists' demands. Therefore, they did not want us to find out about the attempt at this until it was over...Unfortunately, this did not happen, so now they simply blame the US for Italy's not fully informing their allies (the US) about the rescue mission.
