Yahoo News Alert:
NEW YORK (AP) Police say two explosions were heard outside the British Consulate in Manhattan. No injuries have been reported.
Apparently this is near the United Nations Building. We hope there is another explanation for this than terrorism. Details as they come available.
8:40AM Update
Grenades of some sort, apparently.
Yahoo News:
Two small makeshift grenades exploded outside a building housing the British Consulate early Thursday, Election Day in England, causing slight damage but injuring no one, officials said.
The blasts happened at 3:35 a.m.
The grenades had been placed inside a cement flower box outside the front door of the midtown Manhattan building, police spokesman Noel Waters said.
"We do not at this point have any idea who did it or a motive," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said.
Apparently the consulate is expected to reopen later today...but this is looking more like a terrorist attack of some sort to me.
8:55AM Update
Neal Boortz puts out an interesting theory that supports my thoughts...
Today in Great Britain, the British people head to the polls. They'll be deciding whether or not to elect Tony Blair to a third term. Prime Minister Blair has stood with George Bush and the American people in the fight against Islamic terrorism. It's probably going to be found that these attacks were designed to influence the outcome of the election. It worked in Spain, right?
Will the people of England be scared into supporting a terrorist-appeaser and throwing Tony Blair out of office? Probably not. He seems likely to cruise to re-election. Some may not even notice this attack at the British Consulate, since it wasn't successful. But you can bet the person setting off the bombs was an Islamic terrorist trying to disrupt the election.
Although, if the terrorists can't strike in England to effect their election, I really don't think two grenades in New York is going to have the desired effect...maybe they're that desperate.
