What the Left Really Needs...

...is for them to find their Surak.

I can see the non-Trek geeks have a confused look on their face. Let me explain...

According to the STAR TREK.com bio, Surak "traversed a treacherous desert known as 'The Forge' in his quest for enlightenment, and came to conclude that logic is at the heart of every Vulcan soul. His teachings brought this basic truth to his people, and ushered in the great period of reformation and peace known as the Time of Awakening. His writings have formed the basis of all Vulcan belief and philosophy."

I can see some treehugger heading out to the desert or a tropical rainforest for a personal quest for wisdom figuring this out. At some point, some sanity needs to return to the Democratic Party; they can't possibly sink any deeper in to the fever swamp. Or can they?

Vulcan was in a constant state of war. I think it is pretty clear that the Democratic Party is in the midst of a fierce battle for control of their party. The problem with the Vulcans, according to Surak, was that they let their emotions rule their lives. I can't think of a more accurate description of the current Democratic Party. Surak would have the Democrats abandon this destructive behavior in favor of the pursuit of logic.

The Democrats aren't the only ones fighting... Republicans are also engaged in their own war; although they are, for the most part, using more elegant weapons of a more civilized age (that's for the STAR WARS geeks in the audience - and this topic is really a whole different rant for another time).

Will the Democrats ever find their Surak and emerge from the fever swamps and start making sense? Will they ever figure out that the way to bring people to their point of view isn't through insulting the very people they are seeking to convert? If they don't, the Democratic Party will most certainly not Live Long or Prosper.
