G-O-P leaders say they're urging President Bush to name a disaster czar to take over the federal response to Hurricane Katrina."Czars" don't get anything done either. Remember the drug czar? How about the poverty czar? BAD idea. All this would do is add yet another layer of bureaucracy to an already overly bureaucratic system. BAD IDEA! VERY BAD IDEA!
And Texas Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison says she thinks the president likes the idea.
Emerging from a meeting with Bush at the White House, Hutchison and Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum said there was a good deal of discussion about a Katrina czar.
Hutchison says the idea would be to put someone "on the ground" in the Gulf for six to nine months who could make decisions and cut through red tape.
She denies the idea was motivated by the bitter criticism of FEMA director Mike Brown over slow-arriving federal aid. She says in any disaster, there comes a point when it's time to start focusing on the longer term.
Put me down as "against it."
