I will not lie to you. I was an Ann Coulter fan for a while. I read her first two books, and I was astounded at the study she made showing Senator Joe McCarthy to be, while not the most tactful, certainly not the monster the Left has clamored about for years. In fact, most of his observations and investigations were right on. However, Ms. Coulter has, with the Miers issue, revealed herself finally for what she really is: an elitist snob. This has been brewing with me and Ann for sometime, as I read more and more of her columns on a regular basis. However, her hypocrisy and elitism came to a head for me during the Miers fiasco, and let me go on record again as saying I was not in favor of Harriet Miers.
Ann Coulter has always talked about liberals as elitists who talk about going to Harvard or Yale and look down on those who did not go to "the best schools." However, in her column about Miers called "Does This Law Degree Make Me Look Fat?" (Human Events, Oct 17, 05), Coulter slams SMU as not being a good law school. She backs up her analysis (read hatchet job) by citing the average LSAT score at SMU and Harvard, and the differences therein. She basically calls SMU second class because, well, just because Harriet Miers went there and Ann doesn't like Harriet. Therefore, wherever Ms. Miers went, it must suck. Terrible, and how liberal of you, Ms. Coulter.
But wait, it continues. In the same column, Ms. Coulter says that the Texas Bar is full "of losers". I guess while it may not look as sexy as the CA bar or the NY bar, it is still a large and diverse organization. For Ms. Coulter, defeating Miers has caused her to become a hate smearing hack hypocrite. How petty.
But this is not the worst of her indiscretions. Because Bush picked Miers, Ms. Coulter in an earlier column equated Bush with a dictator, thereby allying herself with Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore. Words mean something, Ms. Coulter. By calling the President a dictator, just because he picked someone you don't like, you cheapen the term and do considerable damage to the Presidency.
In the next week, Oct. 25, Ms. Coulter equates Bush and the administration with a monarchy. Gee, Ann, you were so supportive until Miers happened. Now you sound like a liberal. She takes an offhand remark by a staffer about Miers being personable and good at bowling and trashes Ms. Miers with it.
Ann Coulter has shown with her hate and vitriol and her quick change of belief in the President to be nothing more than a hypocritical hack. She shows no true substance other than a penchant for pettiness and cheap shots. Sometimes marginally humorous, usually tactless, Ms. Coulter is off my reading list.
