Alito Doesn't Represent a Victory for the Gang of 14

I keep hearing pundits and iditorialists proclaim the Alito confirmation as some great achievement for the Gang of 14. It isn't. While getting Alito on to the bench at the Supreme Court is a significant thing to celebrate, let's not forget that there are still 28 vacancies in the federal judiciary. At last report, there are 26 nominees stalled in the system.

If the Gang of 14 were a true victory, these 26 nominees would have benefited from it. They would have been heard. They too would have gotten an up or down vote. But nothing has changed for them or the areas of the country where they have been asked to serve.

All that the Great Compromise did was take the limelight off the real problem. Obstructionism is still being deployed as a weapon against the will of the People. And so long as the Gang of 14 has any influence, it will continue to be that way.
