Another Reaganite Gone, Cap Weinberger, RIP

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Caspar Weinberger, U.S defense secretary under President Ronald Reagan, died on Tuesday at age 88, his family said.

Caspar W. Weinberger, who served in the Cabinets of both Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan and was central figure in the Iran-Contra scandal, has died at the age of 88.

"I was deeply disturbed to learn of the death of a great American and a dear friend," said former Secretary of State Colin Powell. "Cap Weinberger was an indefatigable fighter for peace through strength. He served his nation in war and peace in so many ways."

-- August 18, 1917 in San Francisco.

EDUCATION
-- Received an A.B. degree in 1938 and a Juris Doctor degree in 1941, both from Harvard University.

MILITARY -- Entered the U.S. Army as a private in 1941.
-- Was commissioned, and served in the Pacific theater.
-- At the end of the war he was a captain on General Douglas MacArthur's intelligence staff.

LEGAL CAREER -- Between 1945 and 1947, worked as a law clerk for a federal judge, and then joined a San Francisco law firm.
-- He won election to the California State Assembly in 1952, and re-election in 1954 and 1956.
-- Became chairman of the California Republican Party in 1962.

POLITICAL CAREER
-- Secretary of Defense under President Ronald Reagan from 1981 through 1987.
-- Had roles in the Strategic Defense Initiative program (popularly known as Star Wars), and in the Iran-Contra Affair.
