Zanesville, Ohio (Mar. 15, 2006) – Within the past several weeks the anti-tax group “Americans for Tax Reform” has been distributing a press release titled “Harris (OH-18) signs The Taxpayer Protection Pledge, as reported below:I don't think this will do much, but at least it wasn't 17 pages long...Congressional Candidate Signs Taxpayer Protection PledgeHarris says, “I have not taken money from ATF nor from any other Washington D.C. group, but I have signed anti-spending and anti-tax pledges to prove my bona fide Reagan Republican principles, releasing them to the National Taxpayers Union and the Citizens Against Government Waste, and I challenge Rep. Ney to sign a survey or statement releasing it to the CAGW or to the media stating that his votes against the Republican budget reconciliation bill were in error and that in the future he will vote to restrict Federal spending and special interest pork or secret earmarks. I am supportive of Congress’s Republican Study Committee (RSC) and applaud its recent balanced budget proposal to eliminate deficit spending, and I call on Bob Ney to say why he hasn’t joined the RSC or at least indicate where he stands on their latest fiscally responsible proposal to restrain spending growth. Bob Ney has spent a lot of taxypayer money: either he must stop, or he must go.”
Americans for Tax Reform: “WASHINGTON, D.C. – James Brodbelt Harris, a Republican vying for Ohio’s 18th Congressional District seat, recently signed the Taxpayer Protection Pledge sponsored by Americans for Tax Reform (ATR). The Pledge commits signers to “oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rates for individuals and/or businesses … and oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates."
ATR has offered the Pledge to all candidates for federal office since 1987. To date, President George W. Bush, 46 U.S. senators, and 222 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed the Pledge. Additionally, six Governors and over 1,260 state legislators have signed the Pledge as well. “America needs leaders who are committed to protecting taxpayers, and signing our Pledge demonstrates that kind of leadership,” said Grover Norquist, president of ATR.
“By signing the Pledge, James Brodbelt Harris demonstrates allegiance to hard-working taxpayers nationwide, as well as dedication to taxpayers in Ohio. I applaud James for the leadership and dedication he showed by signing the Pledge.” “I strongly encourage every candidate for federal and state elective office to sign the Pledge,” Norquist continued.”
