Awhile back, I had a conversation with COL David Hunt (Ret.) in which I got a view of the status of our military that was something of an eye-opener. I asked COL Hunt about how realistic it would be for the US to open a third front in the war on terror by countering North Korea's missile testing antics. Hunt explained that while we had sufficient naval and aviation forces to pound North Korea (or any other third front target), we do not have sufficient ground forces to win a third front.
This discussion prompted my conclusion that until Afghanistan or Iraq is resolved, the United States should not get engaged in another front unless all that is required is our Navy and Air Force.
We've had a number of developments since I spoke with the Colonel. Al Qaeda has attacked Bombay, India. Hamas and Hezbollah have both attacked Israel and Israel has responded in kind. The Taliban has captured two towns in Afghanistan. And of course, Iraq continues to have its problems. Meanwhile, Iran continues to develop nuclear weapons. There is a LOT going on in the world.
Should the US get involved militarily in all of it? That is what it sounds like to me that proponents of US involvement in the Israel/Hezbollah conflict are proposing. Me? I don't think so. And I think Rick agrees with me. I was beginning to wonder if I was all alone on this one...
