The RNC also reported $3.3 million in “independent expenditures” in three states that are hosting highly competitive Senate races: Ohio ($863,000), where Republican Sen. Mike DeWine is now the underdog against Democratic Rep. Sherrod Brown; Missouri ($95,000), where Republican Sen. Jim Talent and Democratic state Auditor Claire McCaskill are knotted in a close race; and Tennessee ($2.3 million), where Republican Bob Corker, a former Chattanooga mayor, is aligned against Democratic Rep. Harold E. Ford Jr. in a tossup contest for the seat of retiring Majority Leader Bill Frist, a Republican. It is a total fantasy to suggest that the Republicans are "giving up" on these races. This evidence sure doesn't suggest that and GOP Chairman Ken Mehlman has indicated that he plans to spend every dime of the war chest that the RNC has gathered.
The RNC also transferred more than $1.5 million last month to the Ohio Republican Party, which is struggling to maintain control of the governorship, DeWine’s Senate seat, several U.S. House seats and the state legislature.
