While Republican candidates suffered a difficult defeat last Tuesday, Republican ideas were not defeated. The results indicate Americans believe our ideas are better, but lost faith in our ability to produce results. The challenge for us now is to learn from our mistakes and work together to earn the trust of the American people again.
We need John Boehner as our Republican leader in the 110th Congress to lead us in this effort. John said it best last week: "If Republicans stand together and unite behind solutions and ideas that move us closer to our common vision of a freer, more prosperous America , I'm confident the American people will return us to the majority in two years."
John is right: the key to regaining our majority in two years is teamwork and hard work, plain and simple. We know the majority of the American people agree with our core principles. They share our commitment to the agenda that unites all Republicans: reform, fiscal responsibility, smaller government, and accountability.
The challenge for us is to unite and regain our footing on these ideals. John Boehner has spent his brief term as Majority Leader helping us do so. He has made unity and teamwork central components of his leadership. His ability to manage and work with all parts of our Conference is more important now than ever.
John has served in the minority before, both in Congress and in the Ohio House of Representatives. He has pulled Republicans together in the past to unite behind a common vision, and stepped to the plate willingly to hold Democrats accountable. He helped put together the team that led us to the majority before - and drawing on that experience, he can lead us into the majority again.
Americans want a smaller, smarter government that is careful with taxpayer dollars, that strengthens our national security, and that is accountable for its actions. They want to see Republicans acting like Republicans again. John Boehner is the individual who can lead that effort. During his short time as majority leader, he showed what he is capable of doing. He can do even more as our leader in the next Congress, at a time when we need his leadership the most.
