House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement after the bipartisan Legislative Line-Item Veto Act of 2007 was introduced today by Budget Committee Ranking Republican Paul Ryan (R-WI) and a host of bipartisan cosponsors:"The legislative line-item veto is another critical tool that will help balance the budget and ensure we provide greater accountability and transparency in federal spending. Today the American people received another dose of positive news from the Congressional Budget Office, which lowered its deficit forecast to $172 billion, a $76 billion improvement over last year. We can and should balance the budget without raising taxes on working families, and the line item veto will help bring common-sense spending restraint to the federal budget process. Mr. Ryan has been a leader in our efforts to promote fiscal responsibility and reform, and I encourage the new Majority to move this bipartisan measure through the House as soon as possible. "
Nearly identical legislation (H.R. 4890) was passed by the House on a bipartisan vote of 247-172 last year. It was supported by 35 Democrats.
