In Memorium: Rep. Charlie Norwood (R-GA)

WASHINGTON (AP) Rep. Charles Norwood, a seven-term Republican congressman from Georgia, has died after battling cancer and lung disease, his office says.
Republican Leader John Boehner released this statement (via email):
"Today our nation mourns the loss of a great patriot, Congressman Charlie Norwood. My thoughts and prayers, and those of the entire House of Representatives, are with Charlie and his wonderful wife, Gloria. Charlie was a truly honorable man, a fine friend to everyone in this institution, and an extraordinary Representative for the citizens of Georgia 's 10th District and the entire nation. He was a man of principle and conviction; a man who never stopped fighting for the ideals he believed in and the nation he loved to serve. I am honored to have known and served with him, especially during our years together on the Education & the Workforce Committee. Charlie will be sorely missed."
Dr. Norwood was born in Valdosta , Georgia , July 27, 1941. He volunteered for and served as a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1967 to 1969, and was awarded the Combat Medical Badge and two Bronze Stars in recognition of his service under combat conditions in Vietnam. He was elected to serve in the House of Representatives in 1994.
