Tiffin, Ohio - The annual Fifth District Lincoln-Hayes Banquet sponsored by Congressman Paul Gillmor (R-Tiffin) next week will feature more than speeches by Gillmor and special guest Rob Portman. Gillmor’s banquet will have Presidential significance as every attendee that evening will be given one vote in a straw poll for their choice of 2008 Republican nominees for President. The results of the straw poll will be announced at the banquet which is being held on the campus of Bowling Green State University on Friday, June 8, 2007.
“We are nine months from Ohio’s primary election and the race for President of the United States is in full swing. The meaning of a straw poll is to gauge which way the wind blows. With nearly a dozen very qualified candidates including several front runners, a straw poll of Northwest Ohio could be very telling,” Gillmor said. “If the adage is true that as goes Ohio, so goes the nation, and since no Republican has ever been elected President without winning Ohio, attendees at this Lincoln Day will have a chance to be part of more than just dinner and speeches. Our Lincoln-Hayes Banquet has always been one of the largest annual Republican gatherings and the results of our straw poll could be very interesting.”
The Fifth District Lincoln-Hayes Banquet is a low-cost, grassroots event hosted annually by Congressman Paul Gillmor.
