You know, I think I've got this whole thing figured out. President Bush seems to have misunderstood what his base meant when they said that they wanted "enforcement first." John McCain probably understood, but doesn't really care what the base thinks. And Teddy "Hero of Chappaquiddick" Kennedy is "above" listening to what the American people want. The halls of Congress seem to be filled with a whole bunch of people who have no idea what "enforcement first" means.
What does enforcement first really mean?
It means we need to see a wall built on our southern border...first.
It means we need to see more border patrol agents out there doing their jobs...first.
It means we need to have a virtual fence operating to cover the gaps...first.
It means we need to have a method in place to appropriately punish those who hire illegal aliens...first.
It means the Immigration Customs and Enforcement needs to demonstrate that it can actually handle the last part of their name...first.
Then...and only then...can we talk about amnesty for those who came here illegally and what to do with them.
If President Bush wanted amnesty before he left office, he should have handled the enforcement...first...at least two years ago. If he had gotten Congress to deal with enforcement first, we'd be in a position to deal with the amnesty issue by now. But instead, we've passed the buck. Again.
There should be no shamnesty until there is enforcement first.
