The Fred Wins OH-05 GOP Straw Poll

Bowling Green, Ohio - Northwest Ohio Republicans made Presidential waves tonight. At the Fifth District Lincoln-Hayes Banquet hosted annually by Congressman Paul Gillmor (R-Tiffin), guests were given one vote in a straw poll for their choice of 2008 Republican nominees for President. With nearly 250 guests in attendance, most of whom are active Republicans from the Northwest Ohio district, former Senator Fred Thompson emerged victorious.

Results of the Fifth District Straw Poll are as follows:

1. Fred Thompson*, 32.5%

2. Rudy Giuliani, 18.1%

2. Mitt Romney, 18.1%

4. John McCain, 11.4%

5. Newt Gingrich*, 10.8%

The following candidates failed to receive more than 5% of the vote: Michael Bloomberg*, Sam Brownback, Jim Gilmore, Chuck Hagel*, Mike Huckabee, Duncan Hunter, George Pataki*, Ron Paul, Tom Tancredo, Tommy Thompson

* Not an announced candidate for President

“Iowa and New Hampshire had better be ready because the Fifth District of Ohio has already voted. I was happy to give Republicans in my district a meaningful way to express their choice for our Presidential nominee,” said Fifth District Congressman Paul Gillmor. “Republicans have the right values for our communities, the right policies for Ohio and the right message for America. I think this straw poll shows that Republicans have a very strong field of candidates with great support in our communities. Ohio will continue to play a key role in the Presidential election and with seventeen months left until November 2008, this is still a wide open race,” Gillmor said.

The Fifth District Lincoln-Hayes Banquet is a low-cost, grassroots event hosted annually by Congressman Paul Gillmor. For many years, Gillmor’s Lincoln-Hayes Banquet has been one of the largest Republican events in Ohio bringing together conservatives from each of the sixteen counties in Gillmor’s Northwest Ohio district. The Banquet was held at the Bowling Green State University's Bowen-Thompson Student Union on Friday, June 8, 2007 and featured an address by keynote speaker the Honorable Rob Portman.
