The Next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs

AP News Alert:
WASHINGTON (AP) Defense Secretary Robert Gates says he will recommend Adm. Mike Mullen, currently the chief of naval operations, to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
Is it just me or is there an awful lot of turnover in this position? Perhaps one of our military readers can shed some light on the subject...

UPDATE: CQ Politics has part of the story:
Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said Friday he will ask President Bush to replace Marine Gen. Peter Pace as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff rather than risk a contentious Senate confirmation battle by seeking a second term for Pace.
Ahh...politics...somehow, I KNEW that would come up...
