Ohio Cities Lose Population

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Census Bureau is releasing its population estimates Thursday, and Ohio's big cities are among those with the highest population lost.

Of the top ten big cities with falling populations, three are from Ohio.

Cleveland falls third on the list and has lost nearly seven percent of its residents from 2000 to 2006. Dayton saw a 5.7 percent decline in the same period and Toledo's population shrank by 4.9 percent.

Demographers blame the population decline on a migration to the suburbs, residents seeking jobs in other states, and aging baby boomers leaving Ohio for retirement.

Mark Salling, a demographer at Cleveland State University, says the loss of manufacturing jobs makes it more difficult for residents with no college education to find jobs.
This is a bi-partisan problem that really needs to be addressed. Instead, we'll celebrate yet another budget that fails to reduce spending...
