A Victory for Freedom to Choose a Union or Not!

AP News Alert:
WASHINGTON (AP) Senate Republicans block legislation that would make it easier for labor unions to organize workplaces.
Note to the AP...Senate Republicans block legislation that would make it easier for labor unions to CHEAT AT organizing workplaces. That is the correct story...

This just in from Boehner's office:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) today praised Senate Republicans for opposing the so-called “Employee Free Choice Act.” The bill – which would have stripped workers of their right to a federally-supervised private ballot election and left them vulnerable to harassment and intimidation by co-workers, union organizers, and employers – failed to move forward in the U.S. Senate today. Boehner issued the following statement:
“The American people fundamentally believe in the secret ballot, and that’s why this payoff to big labor will not become law. This bill strips Americans of the right to choose – freely and anonymously – whether to unionize, and leaves workers open to harassment and intimidation by employers and union bosses. Congress should be protecting workers from intimidation of any kind throughout the union organizing process – not arbitrarily skewing the results against those who don’t want to join a union. Senate Republicans deserve credit for standing with the American people in opposing this bill.

“Republicans want to grow our economy and create new jobs to help make life better for American families. We should work to make health care more affordable, lower gas prices, and balance the budget without raising taxes. Instead Democrats are content with raising taxes, increasing spending by hundreds of billions of dollars, and eliminating private ballots – forcing workers to make their votes public for everyone to see. The majority’s record is abysmal: they’ve not only failed to live up to any of their promises to the American people, they are actively pursuing policies that will undermine workers’ rights and weaken our economy.”
NOTE: Current law allows for unions to organize through either a federally-supervised private ballot election or a “card check” system – a process whereby union bosses gather “authorization cards” purportedly signed by workers expressing their desire for the union to represent them. The Democrats’ bill does away with federally-supervised private ballot elections altogether, forcing workers into unions without even allowing them the opportunity to express their wishes free from intimidation by co-workers, union organizers, and employers.
