Carey: Zack Space Flip-Flops on Immigration

Zack Space breaks his promises on illegal immigration and fiscal discipline

Newark, Ohio (August 3, 2007)— Just one week after spending thousands of taxpayer dollars on a politically motivated franked mail piece, Congressman Zack Space broke the promises he made in the mail piece.

In a mail piece that hit households in the 18th Congressional District this week, Congressman Zack Space boasted about being one of the most independent members of Congress, being 100% opposed to illegal immigration. Then, late in the night on August 2nd, Space committed a shameful act by switching his vote on the House floor when he thought nobody was watching.

Thursday night, the Democrat leadership schemed to forcibly reverse the outcome of a vote that would have banned illegal aliens from receiving taxpayer-funded benefits. After a majority of the House initially passed the bill, Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat leaders began strong-arming their members into switching their votes in order to defeat the measure. After initially voting to ban illegal aliens from receiving taxpayer-funded benefits, Space succumbed to pressure from his leader, Nancy Pelosi, and voted against the ban.

Mike Carey, Republican Candidate for Congress said, “It is obvious that Zack Space cares more about helping Nancy Pelosi push forth her liberal agenda than representing the values of the 18th District. Zack Space can brag all he wants about being “independent” in his taxpayer funded mailers, but what we saw Thursday night was Zack Space falling in line with his other liberal colleagues.”

Carey went on to say, “Congressman Space claims to be opposed to amnesty for illegal aliens, but then he flip-flops on the issue. If the voters send me to Congress, I pledge to be 100% opposed to amnesty for illegal immigrants, I will fight for better border security, and I will not be strong-armed by anybody into voting against the 18th District.”

Space is nothing more than a rubber stamp for Nancy Pelosi and those are not the values of the district that Space represents. Kudos to Carey for slamming Space on this one...
