The answer, according to this article in The Hill, is no. And neither has Ohio's junior senator, Sherrod Brown. It is interesting to see how many of the anti-war heavy hitters haven't even bothered to go over and see the situation for themselves.
Voinovich and his buddy Pete Dominici recently got a lot of love from the 527 media for their "courageous" decision to announce that as the commanders-in-chief that cutting and running was the strategy they'd like to see implemented. But neither of these guys have even gone over to Iraq to check it out.
Now I can hear what those who oppose the war are going to say next, "But, Matt, you haven't been to Iraq either. You chickenhawk warmonger!" or some such nonsense. My response to that line of hooey has always been the same and it might sound familiar to you lefties: "Listen to the generals." I might add that it helps to listen to more than just a hand-picked selection of our troops too. While looking for coverage of what is actually going on in Iraq, it wouldn't hurt to tap the milblogs or the embedded bloggers. The 527 media sure isn't getting the job done and when they do, "experts" from the feverswamp come out of the woodwork and slam those journalists who have actually decided to be objective and report what's really going on over there.
What is going on over there? We are winning. Sure, the enemy has a few short-term victories that are tragedies in and of themselves; but if you take the long view, things are actually getting better. The surge is working.
General Voinovich once cried on the floor of the United States Senate over the appointment of John Bolton to be ambassador to the United Nations. He later decided that Bolton was a swell guy and that he regretted his earlier theatrics. Will General Voinovich cry when he recants his cut and run strategy? He will be asking for our forgiveness once again, maybe a tear or two might be in order...
