Have we forgotten September 11, 2001?

Isn’t it ironic that the most important assessment on the war in Iraq was delivered on September 11, 2007; exactly six years after our freedoms were attacked? Every week I provide residents of the 88th House district with information concerning legislation and issues affecting the state and district. But my article this week has a much broader scope, one with a focus that concerns our entire nation.

As a serving member of the United States Marine Corps Reserve and one who has had
much exposure to national security issues, I was very interested to receive the
commanding general’s assessment of the situation in Iraq. As many of you may know,
President Bush selected and the Senate approved General David Petraeus as the man to
command the troops in Iraq. His selection was based upon his thirty plus years of
counterinsurgency and gorilla warfare training.

Last week, General Petraeus was the target of liberal left wing groups and protestors that labeled him a liar, questioned his integrity, and impugned his character before he even had an opportunity to speak to Congress. I feel that I must denounce the attacks made on the character of one of this country’s greatest heroes.

Last week, General Petraeus returned from combat in Iraq to provide his assessment of
the progress of the surge in Iraq. On Monday, I read the ad in the New York Times where he was referred to as “General Petraeus or General Betray Us?” The left wing group that paid for this full page advertisement was MoveOn.org. It is unconscionable to me that any organization, regardless of their political slant, could attack the character of such a great patriot.

I was very pleased to watch the General’s presentation to Congress and his professional responses to the biting political questions levied at him. He is truly an officer and a gentleman and should be thanked for his service to this great nation. He and many others who wear the uniform are responsible for the very blanket of freedom that every American sleeps under every night in safety. We can never forget September 11, 2001, Pearl Harbor or any of the other unprovoked attacks on America. I know that this war has become unpopular in many areas; however, we must always support the men and women who wear the uniform.

Yes! It is that time again. Time for the “little state fair” in Brown County, Ohio. Make your plans now to attend the huge parade in Georgetown on Monday, September 24th at 5:30pm. Also, plan to attend the annual Veterans Recognition Program Thursday, September 27th in the Grandstand. I will again have the honor and privilege of addressing our veterans and their families at this most important event.
As always, please contact me at the office if there is a state-related matter you feel strongly about. I can be reached by calling (614) 644-6034 or write me, State
Representative Danny Bubp, at 77 S. High St., District 88, Columbus, OH 43215. I can
