Great Men Need God!
As I travel about the district, I always enjoy reading the signs in front of the various churches and businesses in the area. The Fairview Church on State Route 125 in Adams County presented a great message on their sign this month, “God Doesn’t Need Great Men, Great Men Need God.” I fully agree with their message and want to use that theme in my article this week.
I recently had the honor of participating in a Boy Scout Eagle Award Ceremony for
Daniel Foster at the Bethlehem Church of Christ. I was privileged to present Daniel a
commendation from the Ohio House of Representatives. I referred to the Fairview
Church sign as I presented my comments to Daniel and the large crowd gathered for the
ceremony. I reflected on how the ACLU continually attacks the Boy Scouts for their
traditional stand for God and Country. I told Daniel to always remember that “Great Men Need God” as he prepares to assume a leadership role in our community.
Where is this country headed? Recently, an Eagle Scout in the Dayton area requested a
flag flown over the US Capitol to be sent to his grandfather with a certificate inscribed with the message, “In honor of my grandfather…and his dedication and love of God, Country, and family.”
Unfortunately, the word “God” was left off the certificate. Upon learning of this
intentional omission, Congressman Turner sent a protest letter to the Speaker of the
House Nancy Pelosi. Speaker Pelosi initially defended the absence of “God” on the
certificate; however, Turner and one hundred and sixty fellow congressmen demanded
that the ban be lifted.
Fortunately, the ban was reversed. Congressman Turner stated, “A great victory for
American traditions, religious freedoms and freedom of expression was won.” The word
“God” was included in the Eagle Scout’s certificate to his grandfather. As my good friend and evangelist Ed Bousman would say, “Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition!”
It is tiring to repeatedly hear of the “political correctness crowd” working the political and media elite to attack the fundamental religious freedoms that we hold so dear. I have much more to share on these continuing attacks on our religious freedoms which I will discuss next week in this article.
There are lots of events and dinners to attend this week in the area! But first, all the men better remember Sweetest Day on Saturday, October 20th! Don’t forget the Clermont MRDD Dinner and Auction at the Eastgate Ho liday Inn on Friday, October 19th at 7:00pm. Also, for all of my fellow runners there is the Body Smart First Annual 5K Race in Georgetown, Saturday, October 20th at 9:00am. Becky Cropper’s Brown County 4-H 5K Race is Sunday, October 21st at 4:00pm at the fairgrounds.

This one is from today:
Ohio House Prayer Will Not Be Censored!
Last week in this column, I reflected on the need for community leaders to seek Divinecguidance in their leadership capacity. That need has been the hallmark of this great country beginning with George Washington and continuing through today.
I am pleased that the Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives recognizes that
protecting public prayer is an important issue today. Several months ago in the Ohio
House of Representatives, after a guest minister opened session with prayer, two state representatives walked off the House floor and complained that the guest minister was proselytizing by invoking the name of Jesus. These complaints led to guidelines that censored prayers offered at the start of each House session.
Over the summer, Speaker Jon Husted reflected and prayed on the issue of protecting
prayer which resulted in a change in the House guidelines for prayer. Last month, the
Speaker issued a memo to the House Clerk which effectively removes any guidelines that would censor prayer.
In the memo, the Speaker stated, “As the Speaker of the Ohio House and the leader of
this esteemed chamber I will not allow for our prayers to be censored- prayer is a time of reflection and guidance, a time which should not be governed by political advocacy or personal opinion. Our moment of prayer prior to each House session is a legislative tradition and I stand at the ready to protect this institution. ”
I appreciate the Speaker’s recognition of the importance of prayer and his desire to make sure that Ohioans are able to maintain their freedom of expression through prayer. Censorship occurs in other countries, not in America!
Don’t forget the Veterans of Foreign War’s Fish Fry in Mt. Orab this Friday, October 26th from 5-8pm. There is also one more 5K Run and Walk this Saturday, October 27th at 5:30pm at the Adams County Christian School in West Union. I hope to see you at these events!
