Re: Continuation in Office(HT: "Ex-County Employee" in comments)
Dear Kay:
In light of our relationship over the last seven years, I was personally saddened upon learning that you had entered a plea of guilty to the conspiracy charges arising from the Dynus situation. However, as public officials, we know that we serve at the pleasure of the voters, and that we have been entrusted to serve the interests of the public. Once our actions cause us to lose the public's confidence, we must seriously consider whether we are any longer able to effectively exercise the authority of our office.
Due to your guilty plea to the serious criminal charges arising from you misuse of authority, both the public, and I personally, have concluded there has been a violation of the public trust. As you are no doubt aware, we have received numerous inquiries from county officials, the media and the general public concerning legal options available to the county to force you to vacate your position. Although we are currently preparing our response to these inquiries, I urge you to resign your position immediately and to allow your successor to begin rebuilding the public's trust in the County Auditor's office.
As you undoubtedly know, there are many good people working within the Auditor's office, and my hope is you will spare them any additional disruption and hardship by attempting to remain in office. Despite any misconduct you may have facilitated in the past, you have the opportunity to act with the best interests of the office and the public in mind. Please have your legal counsel contact me as soon as possible to discuss a quick resolution of this difficult situation.
Sincerely yours,
Robin N. Piper
