Thanks for the Vote, But...

I'll take every McCain vote in Florida that I can get, but this guy has a real problem. Meet John Labriola, a Broward County Democratic Party central committee member, and read about his crazy ideas in this Sun-Sentinel piece:
A Democratic precinct committeeman from Lauderhill plans to ask the county party tonight to support dumping House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer.

John Labriola's complaint: despite the promises that got them elected, they've done nothing to end the war in Iraq, and have rolled over for President Bush in other ways.

"They have done the opposite of what they campaigned on," he said.

The Pelosi-Reid-Hoyer offenses:

- Failing to end the war, and appropriating ever-increasing amounts of taxpayer-money for it.

- Refusing to even consider the option of impeaching President Bush.

- Going along with the Bush administration on warrantless wiretapping.
Later in the story, we learn that this guy was also appointed to the school board and here is what he has as a focus for Florida's kids:
Last week, he presented an anti-Obama motion at the School District's District Advisory Council. He’s a member of the council, appointed by School Board Member Phyllis Hope.

Education Writer Kathy Bushouse reports he couldn't get anyone to second the motion, so it failed.

Here’s the unsuccessful school proposal:
Whereas Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life serves as an inspiring example of courageous leadership and aggressive demands to end poverty, racial inequality and the Vietnam War; And whereas Dr. King was wiretapped by the FBI in retaliation for his political activism; And whereas, since joining the U.S. Senate, Barack Obama has failed to provide aggressive leadership in ending the Iraq War, addressing poverty or fighting institutional racism in the judicial system; And whereas Sen. Obama's presidential campaign has been characterized by an avoidance of all things racial in an effort to "mollify white voters," including failing to offer a plan to rebuild New Orleans and declining to mention Dr. King's name during his acceptance speech in Denver on the 45th anniversary of King's "I Have a Dream Speech;" And whereas, on July 9, 2008, Sen. Obama voted to approve the Bush administration's unconstitutional warrantless wiretapping program, which allows the executive branch, without any judicial oversight, to engage in spying on political opponents as was done to Dr. King; And whereas Dr. King called on Americans to judge citizens by the content of their character and not the color of their skin; Now therefore, we call on Broward school district teachers avoid inaccurate and non-historical comparisons between Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Barack Obama and to present the issues in a balanced fashion during civics lessons on the current presidential campaign.
All of this is to describe the enviroment in which a new candidate that we'll be following here on WMD is operating.

Now meet Dr. Marion Thorpe. Thorpe is running in Florida's 23rd District for the United States House of Representatives. This is Alcee Hastings' seat and the district went for Kerry over Bush to the score of 75% to 25% and it is a heavily Democratic district in terms of registered voters to the tune of 4-to-1.

But these are the types of races that we like to spend a little time on because few others will. The 527 media sure won't devote any resources to describing what a good candidate Dr. Thorpe is, so it's up to us. Check him out and learn more about his positions by clicking here.
