WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator George V. Voinovich (R-OH), a member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, today released the following statement in response to OPEC’s production cuts:Drill, baby, drill...and I am glad to have the senator's support.
“Today’s action by OPEC should serve as a reminder that we are still at the mercy of nations who don’t have our best interests in mind. These production cuts, coupled with Congress’ inaction, are a stark reminder that a great deal of our nation’s economic and national security is at the whim of a select few countries. As long as we continue to import 60 percent of our oil from overseas we are at the mercy of countries who do not embrace our ideals. While I’m pleased we have finally abolished the moratoria on exploration of the Outer Continental Shelf, Congress must now focus on opening ANWR, encouraging efficient and environmentally safe development of our offshore resources and speeding future alternatives to the market. We need to find more and use less. This will set us down the path toward becoming the most oil independent country in the world.”
Of course, if he were as pro-American energy as I am, he'd also support opening up the Great Lakes Basin region as well...but that is yet another issue that we'll just have to agree to disagree with Senator Voinovich.
