From the Bullshit Department
The media has exaggerated a sex scandal that has shaken the U.S. Roman Catholic Church and unfairly tainted thousands of priests with overzealous coverage, Pope John Paul II's top aide said Friday.
"The scandals in the United States received disproportionate attention from the media," Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano told Reuters in an interview. "There are thieves in every country, but it's hard to say that everyone is a thief."

Matt's Chat
Listen here Cardinal boy...the Catholic church has been getting away with a very serious crime in this country for a VERY long time and it is about time that the church itself start taking it seriously and actually act appropiately and definitively. This "scandal" is out of control and it is indeed the fault of the church for having not handled the problem properly from the very beginning. The church has been violating the trust of parishioners EVERYWHERE. I for one will not excuse this bullshit any longer. And Catholics everywhere should stop their funding of this institution until they can clean their house and get right with the Lord and the congregations they have done harm. I grew up Catholic and I am disgusted by this display of hubris. It is time for the church to repent...
Mark's Remarks
I am not going to comment on the problems in the Catholic church to the extent of my friend Matt here. I will say that I think the cardinal in the story is understating things to a great extent. By most accounts, I do not think that thousands of children abused throughout this country constitute overzealous coverage. I am sure the children whose lives were shattered and all their loved ones who were affected do not think this is overzealous coverage. I will say that the Catholic church does need some serious housecleaning, but I will not be as vociferous as Matt, as he has more experience than I do. However, I do think the cardinal is wrong in this respect......
