Dean on Mad Cow, Osama, and Abortion

[On Mad Cow] Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean (news - web sites) says the Bush administration missed an opportunity to soften the impact of the country's first mad cow scare and that the American beef industry should receive federal aid to weather the crisis.
...
"What we need in this country is instant traceability," he said.

[Backpeddling On Osama] "As a president, I would have to defend the process of the rule of law. But as an American, I want to make sure he gets the death penalty he deserves," Dean told the AP in a phone interview.

The former Vermont governor, who solidly leads the field of Democratic presidential candidates in both polls and money, said he was simply trying to state in The Concord Monitor interview that the process of trying bin Laden needs to be fair and credible.
...
[And Abortion] Dean also reacted to comments attributed to Democratic rival Joe Lieberman in a story published Friday in The Union-Leader of Manchester, N.H., suggesting the Roe vs. Wade decision needs to be revisited because scientific advances allow a fetus to survive outside the womb much earlier than in the 1970s.

Lieberman issued a statement Friday saying he was misquoted and doesn't want the historic Supreme Court decision to be reopened.

Dean said he wasn't personally familiar with the Union-Leader interview, but he said Lieberman is "very much off base and doesn't understand the science," comparing him to anti-abortion Republicans.

"I think Joe makes the mistake that Republicans do, insinuating himself in the doctor-patient relationship," Dean said.

Matt's Chat

On Mad Cow: Now, when this story broke, I thought that there was no way these guys were going to politicize it. How naive! These guys expect the President to prevent acts of God. For the love of... Look, people, this thing happened. It doesn't matter who is in the White House; this was going to happen. Should we take a look at the situation and determine whether or not there is sufficient protection being provided? Sure. Should we crucify President Bush for it? No. Had Al Gore won the previous election, I'd like to think that Republicans wouldn't politicize it. It is a problem. And it needs to be fixed. Let's not score points over it.

On Osama: Dean is starting to sound a bit like Wes Clark these days. Make up your mind, buddy...especially if you want to be the President of the United States. Dean's mistake was in allowing himself to come off to the press as having some doubt that Dean thought Osama is guilty. A skilled politican would never do that. It may be a liberal press, but they aren't going to give anybody a free pass until they know for sure who is going to be in power...

On Abortion: Perhaps the good doctor should take another look at the Physician's creed. The hypocrisy of this man is amazing. He swears to "do no harm" and yet supports the killing of unborn babies. And to claim for an instant that Republican's don't understand the issue is insulting, arrogant, and uncalled for.

Mark's Remarks

As usual, Matt, you understate things. Howard Dean is a menace to our country. He is very dangerous to America. He has no solid values behind hating Bush. He is backpedalling as much as Clark these days. He has no agenda other than furthering the extreme leftist Socialist agenda of the Government as all powerful. He pretty much wants to stifle dissent and disagreement in the nation, as he rails against those who factually refute his comments. He even wants to create a dictatorship in the Dimocratic party, as he wanted Terry McAuliffe to "silence" his opponents who were criticizing him. He is a hamster's favorite politician, pandering on the one hand with false sympathy and looking squarely down his nose at the same people on the other. Look at his comments on the South. Look at his comments about going back and forth on that. Howard Dean is a disgrace to those who seek high office. He is the most morally vacant, egotistical, vacillating man I have seen....Oh wait, that would be 3rd most, behind William Jefferson Clinton and Al Gore.
