Clarke: Iran Makes More Sense Than Iraq

It would have made more sense to invade Iran than Iraq, says a former U.S. counterterrorism adviser who has already accused the Bush administration of being soft on terrorism and wasting resources by attacking Iraq.

Richard Clarke, a former adviser to three U.S. presidents and four administrations, said mere possession of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) did not justify invading a country. This was the U.S. government's stated grounds for the Iraq war.

"If you take the case of Iran, its nuclear program is far more advanced than Iraq's was," Clarke told the Austrian daily Der Standard in an interview translated into German. "There would have been far more grounds to invade there (Iran)."

Dick Clarke is another Hans Blix...working well past his 15 minutes of fame, Clarke would like the American people to believe that the Bush administration amde the wrong choice in choosing Iraq over Iran. The problem: history. As Dick Clarke well knows, the American intelligence community (and the world community for that matter) was taken by surprise by Iran's disclosures (which was well after the Iraq war was underway).

In a chapter entitled "That Almost War, 1996," Clarke says former U.S. President Bill Clinton almost launched a war against Iran for what Washington says its support for terrorism against the United States.

However, Clarke says Clinton chose not to attack Iran but ordered an "intelligence operation" that seemed to have worked.

"Following the intelligence operation, and perhaps because of it and the serious U.S. threats, among other reasons, Iran ceased terrorism against the U.S.," Clarke wrote. "War with Iran was averted."

So where is the hackery? Well, if Clinton took care of the situation in Iran and averted the need for a war, why is Clarke now advocating that we should have gone to Iran instead of Iraq? Just asking...

Dick Clarke is just another liberal fool with an agenda. He doesn't understand the Big Picture of the Bush strategy; which is working, by the way.

Hey Dick, what about North Korea? Their weapons program is much more advanced that Iran's. Oh wait, your buddy Bill Clinton basically gave them a program, didn't he? Whoops! Guess that is not a catastrophic and miserable failure either, huh? Mr. Clarke, you have no credibility. When it was en vogue to blame Mr. Clinton, you were a chief source for Miniter's book Losing Bin Laden. When you pouted and were useless at the NSC, you were let go; angry that you would not get the Homeland Security Job. You are a sad and pathetic little man, a disgruntled ex-employee, who has nothing left but bitterness and hate.
