Five explosions hit Madrid at Friday evening rush hour -- three of them at petrol stations -- after a warning from the Basque separatist group ETA, police said.At least no one was hurt, but these terrorists must be brought to justice surely as if they were al Qadea themselves. Terrorism must never be tolerated. NEVER.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. The blasts went off in the northern and western sides of the city, not in the city center.
Police described the bombs as low-potency. They went off just as millions of Spaniards were heading out of town for a long holiday weekend.
A caller to the Basque newspaper Gara issued a warning on behalf of ETA, saying five explosive devices had been placed at gas stations along major highways leading out of Madrid, The Associated Press reported.
Mark's Remarks
I wonder how Spain feels about placating terrorists now? I wonder if they accept the historical French position now of harboring terrorists?
One would think old Europe would learn the simple lessons of the past. If you appease one dictator, you will have to appease others, ie., appeasing Mussolini leads to appeasing Hitler and vice versa, and appeasing al Queda appeases ETA.
Instead of cutting and running, as they did, if they would have stood firm, perhaps ETA would have gotten a clear message. It took 9/11 for the US to realize we made a mistake in cutting and running in Beirut and Somalia, what else will it take for Spain to realize it?
Now, dear Euro friends, don't treat me as an unknowing synchopant who hates foreigners. I do not. I love the Spanish culture, having been exposed to it in High School a decade ago and continuing to study it. The remarkable history of this nation of diverse regions coming together to fight off the Moors in the 1300s, I believe, is an amazing one. The stories of El Cid and the literature like Don Quijote are world treasures. However, like much of Old Europe, Spain has fallen prey to rampant liberalism(not in the classical sense, but in the modern sense).
Here is another thought...according to Matt and my own research, under Aznar there were no major ETA attacks like this one since Sept 11, 2001. Hmmm....could it be ETA realized they gained something when Aznar was defeated? Hmmm....
