Uncertain

I am undecided regarding a position on this case before the Supreme Court. On the one hand, these guys deserve to get everything they were promised and Congress did pass a law to that effect. On the other hand, the government responsible for their treatment as POWs no longer exists. The best solution I can think of is to pay these guys off with any of Saddam's Oil-for-Food money that he may have siphoned off...Kojo's Oil-for-Food money would be an acceptable alternative.

Mark's Remarks

Yes, I think the UN should pay some. Especially considering how they did their best to rehabilitate the murderous Hussein by the farce of the Oil For Food programme, not to mention the joke of Hans Blix as arms inspector. Also, Sean Penn should fork over some money to these people since it was his belief that WE are the torturers.

Seriously though, these men deserve some settlement. I think it would be a good gesture if the Iraqi government, or even the Saudi government we protected in 1991, would fork over some dough. However, I am not holding my breath.

Doug's Dialogue

A small struggling country trying build a democracy in spite of overwhelming odds. Already struggling with financial concerns, should they be forced to pay for debts incurred under a previous government? Modern day Iraq? No this was the United States back in 1790's shortly after the Revolutionary War after the Constitution had been written and ratified. The fledgling government of the new United States agreed to pay the all of the debts incurred by the war and by the previous government backed by the faith and credit of the United States.

Do these heroes deserve something? Yes. Who should pay for it? That is a good question. It would be a nice gesture on the part of the new government of Iraq to pay this debt. Saudis and Kuwaitis should be willing to chip in as well. Although in this current state of the world, I don't think that will happen.
