WASHINGTON (AP) The Census Bureau says the poverty rate rose to 12.7 percent of the population last year, the fourth consecutive annual increase.Anybody know how these numbers are arrived at??? I find this very hard to believe.

Updated 4:40pmYeah, I did a little research on the Census Bureau website. Looks like the statistics are generated based on an algorithm that includes median income and number of folks in the household. Here is a more detailed PDF of the “official” report. Appendix B goes into detail of how the Poverty Rate is computed. Looks like non-Hispanic white population is the increases we have seen over the past few years.
One cool stat is that the women-to-men salary ratio is up to 77:100. Go, Ladies!!!
