Increase in Poverty Rate

Yahoo News Alert:
WASHINGTON (AP) The Census Bureau says the poverty rate rose to 12.7 percent of the population last year, the fourth consecutive annual increase.
Anybody know how these numbers are arrived at??? I find this very hard to believe.

Yeah, I did a little research on the Census Bureau website. Looks like the statistics are generated based on an algorithm that includes median income and number of folks in the household. Here is a more detailed PDF of the “official” report. Appendix B goes into detail of how the Poverty Rate is computed. Looks like non-Hispanic white population is the increases we have seen over the past few years.

One cool stat is that the women-to-men salary ratio is up to 77:100. Go, Ladies!!!
