DeWine Has Another Challenger

From the Cincinnati Enquirer:
Smith joins Senate contest

David R. Smith, a financial analyst from Mason who finished ninth in an 11-candidate field in the June Republican congressional primary, has set his sights even higher - a U.S. Senate seat. Smith will formally announce Wednesday that he will take on two-term incumbent Mike DeWine in next May's GOP Senate primary. Smith calls himself the "true conservative" in the race. He will not be the only challenger to DeWine. Earlier this month, Cincinnati engineer and math teacher William G. Pierce launched his candidacy for the seat. Two Democrats are expected to face off in the Democratic senate primary - Paul Hackett, the Indian Hill lawyer and Iraq veteran who lost to Republican Jean Schmidt in the 2nd Congressional District special election in August; and Rep. Sherrod Brown, D-Lorain, a former Ohio secretary of state. Smith, a financial analyst for Procter & Gamble, drew 374 votes in the 2nd District's GOP primary in June. Schmidt, the winner, drew 14,232 votes.

Mark's Remarks

Smith calls himself the "true conservative." I guess being in the finance business makes him a true conservative. I challenge Mr. Smith to take the same tact as Mr. Pierce and meet with the SOB to talk turkey over how he is different from Mr. DeWine. I was deeply impressed with Mr. Pierce's understanding of the oversight function of Congress and of his understanding of the need to reign in the bureaucracy. I wait to see what Mr. Smith has to offer, other than just getting his name in a race and possibly getting campaign funds.

DISCLOSURE: I am NOT the blog administrator for Pierce for Senate, but I know someone who is. Also, while I am impressed by Mr. Pierce, I have no allegiance to a candidate, other than knowing that I will vote for almost anyone in the R party over Mike De Whine. And yes, I know it is misspelled.
