US Rep. Steve King introduced a great piece of legislation, the New Illegal Deduction Elimination Act, or New IDEA. This helps to answer the rising crisis we have of the flooding of our borders. 3 million illegals flood in the south every year. Frontline border patrol agents estimate they are only 25-33% successful. Of 1.5 million arrested as illegal, only 1,640 were removed. This is the scope of the problem.
Here at WMD, we have consistently advocated for immigration reform, and a crackdown on illegal immigration. We have highlighted how we can know who hires illegals by the fradulent Social Security numbers and the tax returns that are filed (see archives). IDEA takes this problem to those who want to perpetuate it: the companies who benefit from hiring illegals.
Here is how it works: if an employer knowingly hires a $10/hr illegal worker over a $15/hr legal worker, the deductions for wages and benefits will be denied in an IRS audit, resulting in a tax liability for the employer. The tax liability plus interest and penalty raises the cost of the illegal to over the 15/hr of the legal worker. At this point, it becomes a rational business decision to veriify legal status and hire a legal worker.
How do employers get the right people and not be fooled by fake ID? Right now, they can instantly check through the Basic Pilot Program, an internet program that verifies status instantly by searching the SSA and DHS databases for legal verification. If employers use this system, they are given a safe harbor under the New IDEA.
Current employer sanctions are not working, and jobs are a magnet for illegals. New IDEA makes our immigration laws more enforceable and remove sthe jobs magnet that draws illegals here.
