U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the following statement on the March employment situation report released today:

"Today's report exceeded expectations and shows that our economy is firmly on the path of steady, sustainable growth. 180,000 jobs were created in March, which was much higher than expected, and the unemployment rate ticked back down to its six year low of 4.4 percent. In addition, hourly earnings were up four percent over the year. This shows that the president's pro-growth policies are working and putting more money in workers' pockets."
