WASHINGTON, May 4 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao issued the following statement on the April employment situation report released today:It is the worst economy since Hoover. I blame Bush!
"Today's report of 88,000 new jobs created in April shows that despite rising energy prices and a slowdown in residential housing, the economy continues to produce new jobs. The unemployment rate remains essentially unchanged at 4.5 percent, which is more than a full point lower than the 5.7 percent average unemployment rate of the 1990s. And the continuing employment gains in health care and professional services underscore the importance of the president's High Growth Job Training Initiative, which trains workers for growing sectors of our knowledge-based economy."
