Time to Update the Profiles

This past week, we once again learned that the war on terror is not a bumper sticker. It is not a farce. It is not some hastily contrived mechanism to get votes. Islamofascists are bent on destroying western civilization and replacing it with dhimmitude. Two attacks were averted, and another failed but did hit its target. The vigilance of passersby and the bravery of law enforcement and military forces helped avert tragedy. Hundreds of plots, many of which cannot be revealed due to secrecy rules, have been stopped. George Tenet, former head of the CIA, in his book, talks about all the successes that were garnered after 9/11 that are still secret.

One thing that continues to gall me is the slowness of people to understand that the liberal profile of Habib Terrorist is all wrong. The libs and the apologists would have you believe that Joe Al Queda out there is just a poor disenfranchised abused Muslim who is striking out against root causes of poverty and no opportunity. They would have you believe that if only we gave them midnight basketball, more education, more money, they would love us. They are dead wrong, as the most recent UK attacks and even 9/11 itself should show us.

Who were the ones doing the attacking? In the recent UK attacks, they were middle to upper middle class professional Muslim immigrants with high priority skills, just the type of people the Brits want to come over into their country. The plot was hatched at a hospital and involved doctors. These are not impoverished poor muslims who are so displaced by poverty that they would rather die than live in poverty. No, these are people who are successful, who have money, who have power and resources. Look at 9/11. Mohammed Atta and the hijacker pilot of United 93 were both from wealthy families and lived lives of avarice and wealth before joining the terrorist groups. These were not people who had nothing to live for, forced to do the bidding of others, who were dimmed by poverty into hating the West. This should tell us something about how we think about terrorists and how we conduct operations and preventative and counter terror ops here in the US.

Look at the vehicles used in the attacks. A flaming SUV in the attack that actually hit its target at the hospital and a mercedes in the disco bombing that didn't happen. These were not rent a cars and chevy chevettes or junkers. These people had the resources to get vehicles no one would ever suspect. They weren't very smart in putting together their evil mixture, as it began to smoke, etc.; but they did have a car no one would think of as a terrorist vehicle.

This tells us that the so-called conventional wisdom is not wise or really conventional. Terrorists are in our midst, and they are not all cabbies or mall workers. Some could be doctors, lawyers, people of wealth. This is not to say we distrust all, but it should speak to how we determine who gets into this country, and what access they have. Especially in light of the near disaster with the shamnesty bill, now is the time to think about real enforcement and deterrence at the borders, to make it so that those who really do want to come here and live peacefully can, and those who have ill intentions will not. We need to change how we think about who can be a terrorist. This is the lesson of the most recent British attacks. If we are going to have a profile, it needs to reflect the current realities. Poor Mohammed the displaced goatherder is not a reality as a terrorist. Until we realize the nature of the threat and who and what we are really up against, we will always be in some type of danger and susceptible to terror. Of course, nothing really to fear here, don't you know? Terrorist threat? That is just a bumper sticker manufactured in Texas.....
