Voinovich and the AMT

Susan in Liberty Twp asks:
Wasn't Voinivich the ONLY Republican that voted with the Democrats Thursday on the AMT. My understanding was that Spector tried to pass a measure that reduced the AMT from 28% to 24%. I thought this was supposed to be a temporary fix to help the taxpayers until the politicians could resolve this. Can you shed any light on this?
That is an excellent question Susan...

Here is the roll call vote records for the Grassely amendment for S.Amdt. 471 to S.Con.Res. 21 which was...
To amend the budget resolution for fiscal year 2008 in order to accommodate the full repeal of the Alternative Minimum Tax preventing 23 million families and individuals from being subject to the AMT in 2007, and millions of families and individuals in subsequent years.
This vote failed 53-44 with 3 non-votes and Voinovich was indeed a NAY... He was joined by Sens. Gregg (R-NH) and Snowe (R-ME)

However, S.Amdt. 473 to S.Con.Res. 21 was...
To save families from the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) first by permitting a deduction for personal exemptions for purposes of computing the AMT.
...and Voinovich was a YEA vote.

There were a TON of amendments voted on in this budget marathon session...it is entirely possible that Voinovich had no idea what he voting on or the impact of his vote. This very well could be another "I'm all for the Fiarness Doctrine, whatever that is moment"...we just don't know.

UPDATE: Well, we've been visited twice by senate.gov since this post went up and the hits came directly here. If Sen. Voinovich's staff has a clarification they'd like for me to run, I'd be more than happy to do so...just email me at wmdtvmatt - at - yahoo - dot - com
