Obama Comments Deemed Offensive by a University
[Story: Dayton Daily News]
Now this is a tricky one. What was posted was not appropriate in any way, but for a university to start policing "decency" that crosses the line into politics is a slippery slope. If the student called Bush a Nazi or something along those lines, it probably would never had come up. I defend the right of a university to police itself but with these social networks, such as Facebook and MySpace, it has to be careful on what it does with this right. When talking politics, where is the line drawn on free speech? Is the university system going to check every Facebook page for anything it deems as offensive? Do political messages fall in this category? Personally I find some comments made by some professors on their websites about our president as not appropriate but I defend the right of these people to have their opinions. Should they also be censured?
